Hyundai Rolls Out Kona, First Entry into Booming Compact CUV Market

“An opportunity to overhaul” the brand, says vice chairman.

Hyundai is a latecomer to the SUV/CUV party, but the 2018 Kona aims to help remedy that problem.

After offering up a tease last week of the new compact crossover it will be bringing to the U.S. market later this year, we’re finally getting a full look at the new 2018 Hyundai Kona.

The new ute slots under existing Hyundai SUVs, the Santa Fe and Tucson, to target one of the world’s fastest-growing vehicle segments – taking aim at such offerings as the new Nissan Rogue Sport, the Honda HR-V and Toyota C-HR. It could prove a critical move for Hyundai, which has found itself short of SUV models even as U.S. buyers by the millions switch from sedans and coupes to utes.

“Even as the global SUV market is nearing saturation, we believe that extra small or small SUVs have more room for growth than large SUVs,” said Hyundai Motor Co Vice Chairman Chung Eui-sun said during the unveiling of the Kona in Seoul on Tuesday. (more…)

Hyundai Pulls Wraps off 2016 Tucson

South Korean maker looks to exploit booming crossover market.

The Hyundai Tucson made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show after weeks of teases by the company.

Hyundai teased the debut of the 2016 Tucson so well that by the time the media hit the maker’s stand for the unveiling, there was little mystery left. However, the maker rectified that by also debuting its new ix20 MPV as well and two future takes on the Tucson.

The maker also displayed its i20, i30 and i40 models for the public as well. While the new people mover and coupes are important, it’s the 2016 Tucson that is the big show. Hyundai showcased its new technology capabilities with two All-New Tucson fuel efficiency concepts – a 48-volt Hybrid and a Plug-in-Hybrid version – as well as a future connectivity cockpit concept.
