Start-Up Lucid Set to Build Arizona EV Plant

The list of electric-car wannabes continues to grow.

by on Nov.30, 2016

Lucid's prototype may seem a little tame compared to its EV-making competition, but it will get a complete redesign, officials claim.

Yet another electric vehicle wannabe has announced it will enter the still-small U.S. market, Lucid Motors revealing plans for a new assembly plant based in the suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona.

Construction on the $700 million factory is set to begin early next year, the company – originally called Atieva – promising to have its first vehicles on the road in 2018. As Lucid, it would join a growing procession of electric vehicle manufacturers, both start-ups like Tesla Motors and traditional auto companies like General Motors, vying for what is still a miniscule part of the American automotive market.

Whether demand will absorb all the new comers is far from certain and could be strongly impacted by the as yet-uncertain energy policies of the incoming Trump Administration which could relax or even eliminate upcoming auto mileage rules that are promoting developing of alternate propulsion technologies. The home page of mysterious auto start-up Faraday Future hints at its planned products. At CES, Faraday will show one.

Just months after its very existence began to leak out, Chinese-owned electric vehicle start-up Faraday Future will show off its first model at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.

The company, which operates out of a Southern California office building once owned by Nissan, released a brief teaser video ahead of this week’s debut. But there are few details and it doesn’t even confirm the widespread speculation that the Faraday car will be battery-powered and possibly offer some early form of autonomous technology.

For his part, Jia Yeuting, the Chinese billionaire who is financing Faraday, is only talking in superlatives. “We plan to revolutionize the automobile industry by creating an integrated, intelligent mobility system that protects the Earth and improves the living environment of mankind,” he said in a letter to Nevada politicians aimed at winning financial support for the venture. General Motors will launch production of its “game-changing” Bolt battery-electric vehicle, the maker announced during a speech at the Chicago Auto Show, confirming a report by TheDetroitBureau.com.

Delivering a promised 200 miles per charge, or more than twice what most current battery-cars offer, Chevrolet is betting the Bolt will serve as a “cure for range anxiety,” said Alan Batey, president of North American operations at General Motors.

A Winner!

But at a price tag estimated at around $30,000 after federal incentives are factored in, the Chevrolet Bolt will come in at less than half that of the current long-range mileage champ, the Tesla Model S. The Detroit battery-car also is on a fast track to production that seems likely to bring it to market ahead of Tesla’s own, more affordable model, the planned Model III. (more…)
