Is the MazdaSpeed 3 fast? Well, yeah.

Here’s the deal with the MazdaSpeed 3: There simply is no way to get this much performance and this much horsepower for this little money anywhere else. But to accomplish that, compromises will have to be made.

The Speed 3 starts with the small Mazda 3 hatchback, which is a very good starting point, much better, in fact than another economy car turned super sports compact, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

But instead of competing directly with the Evo, and the Subaru WRX, which both put their power to the pavement through all four wheels, Mazda decided to aim for a lower price point. To do that, it pummels its front wheels – and only its front wheels – with 263 turbocharged horses and 280 lb.-ft. torque. The benefit is a low base price – $24,495, including destination.

This is gen 2 of the Speed 3 and Mazda has spent considerable time and effort trying to tame the front-wheel-drive nastiness out of the car. Did it work? Let’s find out.


Mitsubishi’s Evo Could Be Gone by 2014

Under Mitsubishi's current product plan the vaunted Evo X could go away by 2014.

What would Mitsubishi be like without its best car, the Lancer Evolution X? Looks like we might get a chance to find out.

According to a report in British car magazine Autocar, Mitsubishi’s future product plans do not include an 11th generation of the niche rally racer, meaning the ultimate pocket rocket could be gone by 2014. Instead Mitsubishi is focusing on building fuel efficient vehicles, particularly electric cars.

The Evo has become a cult classic, a boy-racer rocket living in the body of a budget economy car. The Evo may have a bargain-basement interior, but the bits underneath are what counts.

With a turbocharged 292-horsepower four cylinder and a sophisticated all-wheel-drive sytem, the Evo is the perfect tool for carving up everything from a loose gravel road to kinky tarmac.

Mitsubishi's Lancer Evolution is the great fun to play with in the dirt.The freeway would have been fine for the return trip from the NASCAR race at Michigan International Speedway, but why take the easy route when there’s a great twisty dirt road to take instead?

Dirt is where Mitsubishi’s legendary Lancer Evolution MR was developed, cutting its teeth on the World Rally Championship circuit.

The Evo was in its element. Somehow, it seemed to have a smoother ride on the dirt than on tarmac. Impossible, but large bumps that seemed likely to bounce us out of our seats caused only a minor disruption in the car.

With the Evo’s sophisticated Super All-Wheel Control set to gravel – there are settings for tarmac and snow as well – and the automated manual transmission in manual shift mode, the Evo charged through turns, gripping the loose surface as if it had grappling hooks. With all four wheels searching for grip, the Evo seemed every bit as fast as on pavement.

Video game mavens know all about the Evo. Unofficially known as Evo X for 10th generation, Mitsubishi has resisted the common urge to make the Evo smoother and more sophisticated. Over the years, it’s grown in size, but this is still one extroverted little sedan, worthy of its reputation as the ultimate pocket rocket.
