First Drive: 2017 Genesis G90

Big car, big ambitions.

by on Aug.16, 2016

The 2017 Genesis G90 will take on such lofty competitors as the BMW 7- and Mercedes S-Class.

Say the name, “Hyundai,” and most folks are likely to think of a small econocar like the original Excel, or perhaps something a little larger and more modern, such as the Sonata. And that’s the problem the Korean carmaker has been struggling with as it has tried pushing into the luxury market with offerings like the Genesis and Equus sedans.

No wonder, then, that Hyundai decided to reverse course last year, announcing plans to launch a separate luxury brand that could more directly be positioned against established high-line competitors like BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz.

Reviews You Can Trust!

The all-new Genesis brand made its debut earlier this year with the launch of the G80, a modestly updated version of the Hyundai Genesis sedan targeted against the likes of the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class. But now, the Koreans are set to put a halo around the new marque with the roll-out of the big Genesis G90. And we jumped at the chance to take the premium luxury sedan for several hundred miles of driving through the gorgeous mountains outside of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Hyundai Reveals New Genesis G90 Flagship

Rendering closely resembles Vision-G concept.

by on Nov.10, 2015

The Genesis G90 will replace the current Hyundai Equus and top the new luxury brand's line-up.

Think of it as “déjà vu all over again,” or so the late Yogi Berra might have put it.

Hyundai is offering a first look at what the flagship of its new Genesis luxury brand will look like and, it seems, the G90 sedan will look a lot like the Vision-G concept that the maker rolled out for the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance last August.

Also to be known as the G900 in the Korean market, the sedan “will deliver a concept of ‘New Luxury’ to our customers,” promised Hyundai R&D chief Woong-Chul Yang. “The G90 sits at the pinnacle of the Genesis brand and demonstrates how we apply our human-centered values to give our customer true satisfaction in every aspect of the vehicle ownership experience.”

Kia Co-Pres Schreyer “Addicted” to Change as He Reshapes Hyundai, Kia

“I want to make the brands strong…fresh,” says design chief.

by on Aug.18, 2015

The Hyundai HCD16 Vision-G gets a second showing at the Pebble Beach Concours.

Parked on a field off the well-manicured greens of the Pebble Beach golf course, the big coupe almost glows in the late evening sun, drawing admiring stares from the crowd that surrounds it.

For now, the HCD16 Vision-G is just a concept vehicle, but Peter Schreyer is quick to tell you that it will have a significant role in the Hyundai brand going forward. And he should know. The one-time Audi stylist who now serves as co-president of both the Korean carmaker and its sibling brand Kia, Schreyer has won wide praise for transforming two econobox brands into design trendsetters.

“I want to make the brands strong, while keeping them fresh,” said the 62-year-old Schreyer during an interview with

Hyundai Vision G Concept Hints of Radical Shift for Next Equus Sedan

Big show car also could return as new premium coupe.

by on Aug.12, 2015

The Hyundai HCD-16 Vision G Coupe concept makes its debut in LA before heading to Pebble Beach.

When Hyundai launched its big Equus a few years back, it took a relatively conservative approach to styling in its bid to take on such premium luxury models as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7-Series. Expect to see it shift into a more radical gear going forward, at least if the new Hyundai HCD-16 Vision G Coupe Concept is any indication.

Making its debut a few days ahead of the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Vision G pushes the luxury design envelope much as the last-generation Hyundai Sonata took things to the extreme in the mainstream, midsize luxury sedan segment. And while there are no plans to put the show car into production, senior Hyundai officials confirmed to that signature styling “cues” will reappear on the next-gen Equus when it is redesigned in the next several years.

Show Off!

“You’re not wrong,” when asked if the concept is a forerunner of the Equus replacement, said Peter Schreyer, the director of styling, and one of three presidents, for both the Hyundai and sibling Kia brands. The Vision G “carries a lot of DNA of our future direction.”

The luxury arm of Germany’s Daimler AG said it met demand for 183,467 vehicles in March, a strong 15.7% increase from the same month a year before.  Mercedes says it also had its best first quarter ever.

The Journal of Record!

“These successful results are due in no small part to the product offensive we continued to drive forward in March,” declared Ola Källenius, the Daimler board member responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing & Sales.

Cadillac to Launch New Flagship in Late 2015

by on Sep.19, 2014

The new flagship is expected to show the strong influence of the Cadillac Elmiraj concept coupe.

Cadillac will fill a long-open gap in its line-up when it launches production of an all-new flagship sedan late next year, the as-yet unnamed “high-technology” car set to be produced at General Motors’ “Poletown” plant in Detroit.

The new model, expected to go up against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series and Audi A8, is expected to introduce the new Super Drive system GM CEO Mary Barra announced earlier this month which will allow autonomous driving on highways. The broader goal is to reposition Cadillac as a serious contender in the premium luxury market it once dominated, especially as the brand expands its global roll-out.

“The objective for this upcoming model is to lift the Cadillac range by entering the elite class of top-level luxury cars,” said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen. “Currently in development, this new rear wheel drive-oriented sedan uses completely new, custom-designed materials on a unique vehicle architecture.

Surge in Sales Propels Daimler Profits

Revenues up 6% as demand grows for new S-Class, other models.

by on Jul.23, 2014

Daimler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche during a recent product unveiling. Mercedes plans to launch 30 new models by the end of the decade.

Promising to regain its once-formidable lead as the world’s top luxury car manufacturer, Daimler AG has unleashed an unprecedented product assault that has begun gaining traction with consumers – driving a surge in second-quarter sales and earnings for the parent of the Mercedes-Benz and Smart brands.

With revenues up 6%, to $42.4 billion, Daimler posted a net profit of nearly $3 billion for the April to June period. But perhaps more telling was the fact that earnings before interest and taxes, or EBIT, shot to 7.9% of revenue during the latest quarter, up from 6.4% a year earlier.

The Journal of Record!

“We are growing profitably, our strategy is bearing fruit,” said Daimler AG Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche in statement accompanying the earnings announcement. “We are very satisfied with the second quarter and continue to work effectively on structural improvements.”

New S-Class Coupe to Maintain Mercedes’ High-Tech Push

S-Class Coupe will be first with new Curve-Tilt Function.

by on Jul.07, 2014

Mercedes-Benz is looking to re-establish itself as a technological leader with the new S-Class Coupe.

With plans to launch at least 30 new models before decade’s end, in a bid to keep ahead of its aggressive luxury competitors, Mercedes-Benz also aims to position itself as the market’s technology leader.

And for those already overwhelmed by the features on the S-Class sedan introduced just last year, Mercedes plans to take things a step further with the debut of its new flagship, the redesigned and renamed S-Class Coupe, which will boast such new technologies as the German maker’s first in-house nine-speed gearbox and the all-new Curve-Tilt technology first seen in concept form several years back.

The new S-Class sedan is already off to a good start, noted Jörg Bartels, who was responsible for the development of the S-class Coupé, during the presentation of the successor to what was previously known as the Mercedes-Benz CL. Even though the new S-Class is still being rolled out to new markets, sales for the first six months were double those of the old sedan during the first half of 2013. (more…)

Mercedes S-Class Coupe Throws an (Active) Curve

Mercedes-Benz infuses top-line 2-door with technology.

by on Mar.04, 2014

The new 2015 Mercedes S550 Coupe premiered at the Geneva Motor Show features all of the active safety technology of the S-Class Sedan.

Fans of all the gadgets that came out with Mercedes’ S-Class Sedan last fall are going to be just as happy with the new S-Class Coupe that debuted at the Geneva Motor Show.

If anything, the new two-door is set to match and even exceed the sedan’s level of technical sophistication.

News to Charge You Up!

Thomas Weber, head of corporate of corporate research at Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz Cars development, said the new S-Class coupe comes with “active curve-tilting function.” The vehicle leans into curves much like a motorcyclist, thereby reducing the lateral acceleration acting on the vehicle’s occupants. On country roads, in particular, this means greater driving pleasure and ride comfort for our customers,” Weber said. (more…)

Mercedes Stretches S600 to Fill Maybach Role

New top-of-the-line model laden with power, technology.

by on Jan.13, 2014

Mercedes-Benz is pushing the S600 as the Maybach replacement until the Pullman arrives next year.

The death of the ultra-exclusive Maybach brand left Daimler AG in a quandary: how to compete against rivals like BMW-owned Rolls-Royce and Volkswagen’s Bentley. The plan calls for stretching the time-tested Mercedes-Benz brand even further up-market – even as it also dips lower than ever into the luxury segment with the likes of the new CLA and GLA models starting at under $30,000. Pushing its top price to 10 times that much is going to be a real test of the Mercedes tri-star’s pulling power.

We’re getting a sense of how the German maker plans to do it with this week’s launch of the new Mercedes-Benz S600. It’s the latest – and soon to be most-expensive – version of the flagship S-Class offered. But it won’t have that distinction for long. The new S600 sets the stage for the launch, later this year, of the Pullman, the stretch model that will be the true replacement for the old, and largely unloved Maybach.

Your Inside Source!

If the new S600 is the scene-setter, it does so in grand fashion. While there are plenty of new, high-line touches, the heart of the new beast is its bi-turbo V-12 engine which powers a sedan offered only in long-wheelbase form with a luxurious complement of equipment full of the latest connectivity and active safety technology as will as other advanced features Mercedes hopes will justify a price tag that could top $150,000.
