While Mercedes didn’t provide any reason for Cannon’s departure, the maker has been losing momentum in recent months, a time when the U.S. luxury market normally heats up. The German maker has been battling against rivals BMW and Japan’s Lexus for segment leadership.

Actor Jon Hamm and Mercedes-Benz USA President Steve Cannon unveil the new S63 AMG Coupe.

Too bad for Don Draper that he’d be long retired by now. Had he stuck around, the fictional advertising executive in the popular TV series Mad Men would have been ponying up his paycheck to purchase one of the new Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupes that is making its debut at the New York International Auto Show.

Or so says Jon Hamm, the actor who portrays the handsome and worldly Draper – but who also provides voiceovers for the German maker. Initially hidden behind the scenes during Mercedes’ auto show news conference, Hamm came out on stage to help unveil the new luxury coupe with Mercedes-Benz USA President Steve Cannon.

Clearly enjoying the assignment, Hamm said, “I can promise you if we were doing Mad Men today, I would put it into my contract that Don Draper would drive this car.”

It would probably take someone in his position as co-owner of a Madison Avenue ad agency. While Mercedes has yet to reveal the price of the C63 AMG 4Matic Coupe, the model it replaces started at $154,600 – plus delivery charges.

Smart's ForTwo represents the automaker's biggest problem. The 13-year-old design needs to be revamped to be competitive.

Mercedes-Benz USA has named one of its veteran retail strategists to take over the troubled Smart brand.

Tracey Matura, currently general manager of retail strategic development, was named to take over the brand a month after M-B announced it was canceling the Penske Automotive Group’s contract to distribute Smart cars in the U.S.

A Smart Source for Auto News!

Matura has a tough job. Initially given Smart distribution rights in 2008, Penske had good success the first year as the car’s novelty and tiny size made it a cult favorite. But once the early adopters got their Smart cars, keeping the sales momentum became tough.
