Mercedes Ready to Unleash the New S-Class

Zetsche says new model will hit the show circuit.

The S-Class sedan is getting an update that will be on display at the New York and Shanghai auto shows.

Mercedes-Benz plans to present an updated version of the S-Class sedan next month during auto shows in New York and Shanghai, Daimler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche told the company’s shareholders in Berlin.

“Technological paradigm shifts often result in the former top dog of a sector being replaced. But we’ve got everything we need to resist that pattern,” he said.

“The future offers Daimler a multitude of new opportunities and we will do our utmost to take advantage of them,” said Zetsche, who added the company’s overall strategy calls for boosting new initiatives and well-established advantages. (more…)

Uber Reportedly Buying 100,000 Mercedes S-Class Sedans

Move could help ride-sharing service challenge black limo services.

It's not clear how Uber would distribute the S-Class sedans to its network of contract drivers.

Ride-sharing service Uber has reportedly placed an order for at least 100,000 Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedans.

Neither Uber nor Mercedes’ parent Daimler AG responded to a request for comment, and it’s not quite clear how soon the vehicles will be delivered, but according to Germany’s Manager Magazin, it is a “long-term” order.

Also unclear is how the luxury sedans would be used by the world’s largest ride-sharing service. Until now, Uber drivers have been required to provide their own vehicles.


Ford Will Build New Lincoln Continental Alongside Mustang, Fusion

Ford Motor Co. has revealed plans to produce its new luxury flagship, the Lincoln Continental, at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant where it will roll down the line alongside the Ford Mustang and Fusion models.

The Continental will be the most significant effort in years by Ford to revive the fortunes of its long-struggling Lincoln brand. Ostensibly a replacement for the outgoing MKS sedan, it will move Lincoln up-market, in line with rival Cadillac’s new CT6 flagship sedan.

The Flat Rock plant is one of the maker’s most important U.S. assembly plants, and also one of its most flexible, capable of producing both front-wheel-drive models like the Fusion, as well as the rear-drive Mustang. Lincoln has not yet disclosed specific details about the Continental drivetrain but it is expected to offer an all-wheel-drive version, in keeping with trends in the premium luxury market.

The Cadillac CT6 makes its official debut the night before the opening of the 2015 NY Auto Show.

With the official unveiling of its new CT6 sedan, Cadillac is setting out to “reinvent the premium luxury segment, global president Johan de Nysschen declared Tuesday evening. But the debut of the big sedan is also about reinventing the once-dominant Cadillac brand itself.

In the works since late 2009, shortly after parent General Motors emerged from bankruptcy, the Cadillac CT6 will go up against some of the world’s toughest competitors, vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series and Audi A8. But Caddy officials insist they went to play the game on their own terms as they begin an $8 billion product program that will more than double the breadth of the brand’s current line-up.

The process began with the debut of the small ATS and mid-range CTS, and now moves to the premium segment where Caddy hasn’t been a significant player in years. “The challenge, us to reinvent the large luxury segment, a category Cadillac once called its own,” said de Nysschen, during a preview ahead of the official opening of the New York Auto Show.

Mercedes-Benz is looking to re-establish itself as a technological leader with the new S-Class Coupe.

With plans to launch at least 30 new models before decade’s end, in a bid to keep ahead of its aggressive luxury competitors, Mercedes-Benz also aims to position itself as the market’s technology leader.

And for those already overwhelmed by the features on the S-Class sedan introduced just last year, Mercedes plans to take things a step further with the debut of its new flagship, the redesigned and renamed S-Class Coupe, which will boast such new technologies as the German maker’s first in-house nine-speed gearbox and the all-new Curve-Tilt technology first seen in concept form several years back.

The new S-Class sedan is already off to a good start, noted Jörg Bartels, who was responsible for the development of the S-class Coupé, during the presentation of the successor to what was previously known as the Mercedes-Benz CL. Even though the new S-Class is still being rolled out to new markets, sales for the first six months were double those of the old sedan during the first half of 2013. (more…)

New Products Drive Sharp Surge in Daimler Earnings

Mad Men star Jon Hamm helped unveil the new S63 AMG 4Matic Coupe at the NY Auto Show.

With new models like the Mercedes-Benz CLA drawing in a new generation of buyers, the brand’s German parent Daimler AG reported its net profit nearly doubled during the first quarter.

The German maker had struggled to overcome a series of problems in recent years, notably including a slide in demand in China, but Mercedes’ rebound in that booming market further lifted the maker’s earnings to 1.086 billion Euros for the January to March quarter, or $1.498 billion, up from 564 million Euros a year earlier.

“Our strategy is paying off,” said Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche, “our investments are bearing fruit.”

In a statement accompanying its earnings, the maker predicted both revenues and earnings would “significantly increase” for all of 2014 as it gained ground in China while also boosting sales in more established markets like the U.S. and Europe.

How do you enhance an icon? That’s the challenge Mercedes-Benz faced when the German maker set out to redesign its flagship S-Class sedan – a vehicle likely to spur big changes across the premium-luxury market.

While there are faster cars, more expensive cars and more exclusive cars, the S-Class has long been the benchmark in the premium luxury segment. And that’s a position Mercedes intends to maintain with a new 2014 model that not only introduces a raft of safety technologies that come a step short of autonomous driving, but also by adding such over-the-top features as an automated perfume dispenser and a hot stone-style massaging seat.

Mercedes Aesthetics S Concept To Offer Hint of Next-Gen S-Class

What a relief...the Aesthetic S is more bas relief than traditional concept car.

It’s getting crowded at the top.  All manner of new premium luxury sedans are coming to market and not to be outdone, Mercedes-Benz is offering a hint of what its next-generation S-Class will look like with the upcoming Aesthetics S Concept.

Set for a formal debut at the Paris Motor Show, later this month, the Aesthetics S isn’t your typical show car, however, but the automotive equivalent of a bas relief sculpture, which the automaker describes as “an artistic glimpse of the design of the luxury saloon of the foreseeable future.”

How much of the next S-Class can we see in the images the maker has released?  That remains to be seen, of course, but it clearly continues the steady move away from the heavy-handed, Teutonic barges of decades past, evolving into a sleek and elegant, wind-cheating form that nonetheless maintains a sense of power and prestige in the almost coupe-like roof and wide rear haunches.


Lexus To Unveil New “Flagship” at “Invitation-Only” Event

Next-gen LS to offer more passionate styling, hybrid, sport and long-wheelbase variants.

Expect to see some key elements of the newest Lexus GS carry over into the 5th-generation LS - notably including the "spindle grille."

Toyota President Akio Toyoda has been promising to put more “passion” into his company’s products – providing a hint of this new direction with offerings as varied as the new Toyota Avalon, Scion FR-S and the 2012 Lexus GS.  But the real test will come when, late this month, the maker’s luxury division lifts the covers off an all-new version of its flagship LS line.

A terse news advisory from Lexus reveals Lexus will unveil the fifth generation of that flagship sedan at an “invitation-only” event taking place in San Francisco on July 30th.

The release notes that the next-gen Lexus LS will be offered in standard and long-wheelbase versions, with an updated version of the LS 600h hybrid and an all-new LS 460 F Sport on tap, as well.  Beyond that, it’s a matter of wait-and-see but some insight can be glimmered from recent moves the marque has been making.
