Mercedes Planning Flood of New Compact Models

Maker still debating which will come to the U.S. market.

by on Jan.09, 2017

The newly updated Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4Matic made its debut in Detroit Sunday night.

Few automakers have added more new models in shorter order than Mercedes-Benz, the German company take aim at virtually every possible market niche.

But Mercedes officials think there’s still a few gaps in the line-up, notably at the lower end of the spectrum, and that means we could see a sizable increase in compact and smaller offerings, though not all the additions will make it across the Atlantic.

Auto Show News!

“Our compact car family will grow from five to eight members in the near future,” said Britta Seeger, the board member who was recently appointed head of Mercedes-Benz global marketing and sales, during an appearance at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Acura Hopes Revised ILX Can Gain Momentum in Booming Compact Luxury Market

Update delivers more power, technology and improved appearance.

by on Nov.21, 2014

Acura's Mike Accavitti introduces the 2016 version of the Acura ILX this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

In the high-tech world, companies like Apple often go for what’s known as “first-mover advantage.” By that logic, Acura should be dominating the booming compact luxury sedan segment with its once-groundbreaking ILX model. But things haven’t worked out as the maker hoped.

The ILX has been struggling to simply hold its momentum as newer entries like the Audi A3 and segment-leading Mercedes-Benz CLA race to market. Sales of the Acura offering tumbled 19.3% last month and are off 16.2% for the full calendar-year.

Auto Show News!

So, the luxury arm of Honda Motor Co. has a lot riding on the 2016 version of the Acura ILX that was unveiled this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The updated model comes as an unusually early mid-cycle refresh, and aims to address the shortfalls of the original by tweaking its appearance, boosting its power and adding plenty of new technology. Cadillac Working on Possible CLA, A3 Fighter

Detroit maker reportedly working on rear-drive subcompact.

by on Aug.18, 2014

The ATS may not be Cadillac's smallest offering in the near future. The company is contemplating a Audi A3/Mercedes-Benz CLA fighter.

It’s turning into a busy season for Cadillac, what with a string of new product launches ahead, and a new global boss set to report to work this week – and former Infiniti chief Johan de Nysschen will be facing some tough decisions when he settles in at his new office at Detroit’s Renaissance Center.

One of the most critical could be whether or not to proceed with a new small sedan Cadillac has apparently begun pulling together, a vehicle that could target one of the world’s fastest-growing luxury niches. With Caddy now looking beyond American shores for its future growth, taking on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz CLA and Audi A3 could be critical.

The new entry, if approved, would differ from some of the competition – such as the front-drive CLA – by sticking with rear-wheel-drive, though an all-wheel package apparently also would be in the works, according to an interview Cadillac marketing chief Uwe Ellinghaus had with Car & Driver magazine. Critically, it would slot under the smallest model in the current Caddy line-up: the ATS. (more…)

New Products Drive Sharp Surge in Daimler Earnings

CLA, other line-up additions draw in new buyers for Mercedes brand.

by on Apr.30, 2014

Mad Men star Jon Hamm helped unveil the new S63 AMG 4Matic Coupe at the NY Auto Show.

With new models like the Mercedes-Benz CLA drawing in a new generation of buyers, the brand’s German parent Daimler AG reported its net profit nearly doubled during the first quarter.

The German maker had struggled to overcome a series of problems in recent years, notably including a slide in demand in China, but Mercedes’ rebound in that booming market further lifted the maker’s earnings to 1.086 billion Euros for the January to March quarter, or $1.498 billion, up from 564 million Euros a year earlier.

“Our strategy is paying off,” said Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche, “our investments are bearing fruit.”

In a statement accompanying its earnings, the maker predicted both revenues and earnings would “significantly increase” for all of 2014 as it gained ground in China while also boosting sales in more established markets like the U.S. and Europe.

Audi Eager to Launch New A3

Audi hopes compact model will echo success of Mercedes CLA.

by on Mar.12, 2014

The all-new 2015 Audi A3 is coming to America and will be offered in four different versions.

Audi plans to kick off sales of the new A3 early next month with events at every dealership in the U.S. and Scott Keogh, president of Audi of America, says he is looking forward to the upcoming duel with Mercedes-Benz for buyers looking for a luxury car starting a shade under $30,000.

There’s little doubt the market is interested considering the rousing demand for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA since its introduction last autumn.  In fact, Daimler AG chief executive officer Dieter Zetsche recently said the Mercedes biggest challenge right now is getting more cars to sell since demand is so strong. And Audi’s rival says about 80% of CLA customers are new to the Mercedes brand.

Product News!

But Audi thinks it can fight back with the next-generation A3 which made its debut in Europe last year but is only now coming to the States in sedan form.  And much as the CLA has lifted the fortunes of Mercedes, which last year became the luxury market’s top-seller in the U.S., Audi hopes it can lift itself out of its distant third-place status, a seemingly realistic goal considering it became the world’s best-selling luxury brand for the first two months of 2014, nudging aside BMW.

How Low Can They Go? Competition Heats up for Entry-Lux Buyers

Audi debuting A3 at $29,900 to take on Mercedes CLA.

by on Jan.17, 2014

The all-new 2015 Audi A3 is coming to America in four different versions.

Audi will introduce its completely redesigned 2015 A3 sedan at a starting price of just $29,900, about $4,000 lower than the maker’s current base model, the A4.  That means Audi also will match the price of the new Mercedes-Benz CLA, currently one of the hottest products on the U.S. market.

The Audi A3 and Mercedes CLA are part of a wave of new entry-lux vehicles – a list also including makers like Lincoln, Cadillac and Lexus – that are meant to attract buyers who might traditionally opt for mainstream brand offerings but who would like a vehicle with a more upscale cache.

“We’re seeing buyers we’ve never seen before in our stores,” Steve Cannon, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, says about the impact of the new CLA coupe-like sedan. The model is perhaps the German maker’s biggest success story in the U.S. ever, with an estimated 80% of its buyers coming from outside the Mercedes brand.

Compact Luxury Cars Could be the Next Big Thing

Mercedes, BMW, Audi and other high-line brands move mainstream.

by on Oct.02, 2013

The new 2014 CLA 250 takes Mercedes-Benz into a segment where competitors include Ford's upscale Fusion Titanium editions.

While the all-new 2014 S-Class sedan might serve as the “flagship” of the Mercedes-Benz line-up, the German luxury maker’s big news this coming year is actually its smallest offering, the new CLA.

At first glance, it’s easy to confuse the coupe-like sedan with the older Mercedes CLS model, something that was far from coincidental, company officials concede.  But there’s no confusing the numbers on the Munroney window sticker, the compact CLA starting at just $29,990 – compared with the $73,025 base price of the bigger four-door.

With the launch of the CLA, Mercedes is going after a new generation of luxury buyers that it hopes will become long-term brand loyalists. But the German maker isn’t alone.  Virtually every manufacturer in the luxury car segment, from BMW to Volvo, is rushing to market downsized and lower-priced luxury models, whether sedan, coupe or crossover.  And that could be particularly bad news for mainstream manufacturers like Ford Motor Co. who have themselves been pushing upwards into the luxury segment.

Daimler Turns to Hungary for New CLA

Will be smallest Mercedes ever sold in US market.

by on Jan.29, 2013

Daimler CEO Deiter Zetsche introduced the Mercedes CLA-Class at a private press preview at the Detroit Auto Show.

Daimler AG has launched production of its newest model from a brand new plant in Hungary. Based on its compact A-Class platform, the new Mercedes-Benz CLA will become the smallest vehicle the German luxury maker has ever sold in the U.S. when it reaches American showrooms later this year.

The decision to produce the CLA at the new plant in Kecskemét, Hungary appears to be a critical step in holding down production costs on a vehicle that would be difficult to market in the U.S. and other parts of the world were it to come from Germany, analysts suggest.

The CLA is the first model exclusively built in Kecskemét, but the plant’s second product along with the slightly larger Mercedes B-Class, which went into production last year for delivery to markets across Europe.

Mercedes Adding 11 New Models to US Line-Up

Another 19 to get updates, replacements.

by on Oct.26, 2012

Mercedes' product blitz will see the small CLA coupe-like-sedan come to the U.S.

Mercedes-Benz is about to deliver a heaping bowl of alphanumeric soup.  Once known for just a handful of iconic products like the E-, S- and SL-Class models, the maker has rapidly added offerings to its global line-up in recent years. And while a few of those won’t make it across the Atlantic, a senior executive says U.S. motorists will soon see 11 new product offerings.

That’s on top of the planned update or replacement of 19 other Mercedes products currently in American showrooms, according to Steve Cannon, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA.

That’s a significantly broader range of new products than the executive had promised just a few months ago and appears to reflect a variety of factors not limited to the overall expansion of the Mercedes global line-up.

BMW, Mercedes-Benz Readying Product Blitzes

Makers count on partners to help spread the costs.

by on Jul.18, 2012

Mercedes' product blitz will see the small CLA coupe-like-sedan come to the U.S.

Locked in a global battle for the growing luxury market, both BMW and Mercedes-Benz plan to launch a new product blitz never before seen in the high-line realm – even as they both fight it out for dominance in what remains the world’s largest luxury market.

The product assault is expected to cover a wide range of the luxury market, including the premium luxury segment, but a significant focus will be placed on lower-end offerings such as the BMW X1 crossover and a comparable offering from Mercedes.

Both makers will also turn to their allies for assistance in turning out their new products, rather than going it alone as they traditionally might have.

Mercedes officials have confirmed that they will roll out at least 10 new products in just the coming year.  Now, BMW appears to be preparing to boost its current model line-up from six to 10, according to a report in Automotive News.
