Mercedes to Drop New E-Class Convertible, Four AMG Models in Geneva

34 models and a VR look at others to come.

by on Feb.23, 2017

Mercedes plans to unveil 34 new models during the Geneva Motor Show using virtual reality, including this new C-Class cabriolet.

For those who want to look a few years into the future, Mercedes-Benz plans to turn to virtual reality at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. The German automaker says it will use a customized VR system to let media and other show-goers see what it’s planning for the new Mercedes-EQ battery-electric sub-brand.

But there’ll be plenty of sheet metal on the Swiss show stand, as well. In fact, Mercedes will have a tough time squeezing everything into its short news conference in Geneva, as it rolls out an assortment of 34 different concept and production models, ranging from the Concept X-Class to the limited-edition Maybach G650 Landaulet utility vehicle.

Also on tap: four all-new AMG models, as well as the latest-generation E-Class Cabriolet. The midsize convertible will line up along the latest-generation sedan, wagon and coupe models to complete the new E-Class line-up. (more…)

AMG, Maybach, Buoying Mercedes as it Takes Global Luxury Lead

Is an all-electric AMG in the cards?

by on Jan.16, 2017

The Mercedes-AMG GT R takes on winter's worst in the latest expansion of the Forza racing game.

Once rare, Daimler’s AMG division seems intent on turning out high-performance versions of just about every possible Mercedes-Benz model – sometimes two or more, as it demonstrated at the Detroit Auto Show with the launch of several new Mercedes-AMG GT variants.

The latest AMG models are not just faster than ever, they’re flying out of showrooms at a record pace, with little indication of any slowdown in sight as the brand that began in a German garage marks its 50th anniversary.

AMG isn’t the only brand-within-a-brand success story for Daimler. If anything, however, Maybach may be an even bigger surprise, having come back from the dead just two years ago as the marque for Mercedes’ most exclusive models. The reincarnated brand is now selling more cars in China each month than it did worldwide in its previous life.

Mercedes’ AMG Aiming to Redefine the Future of Performance

Power output isn't necessarily the ultimate measure.

by on Mar.24, 2016

The Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 is powered by a twin-turbo V-6. AMG is looking to change the perception of what's considered "high performance."

It wasn’t all that long ago that delivering 300 horsepower was considered impressive and 400 almost unattainable. As performance fans know, a number of models have lately smashed through the 1,000 hp barrier, the new Bugatti Chiron punching the number up to 1,500.

But is horsepower alone the goal? Is that the only way to define performance? And if so, how far can the industry go?

Reviews You Can Trust!

While no slouch, with plenty of products topping the 600 horsepower, Daimler AG’s AMG arm wants to define what performance means on its own terms, and simply chasing ever-bigger numbers is not what that’s all about, said the German subsidiary’s CEO Tobias Moers, during a small media roundtable at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. Jaguar Steps Up High Performance Game with F-Type SVR

Special SVO unit ready to battle BMW, Mercedes.

by on Mar.23, 2016

Jaguar Land Rover's Ian Callum introduces the new Jaguar F-Type SVR at the New York International Auto Show.

Jaguar Land Rover is pushing ahead with its plans to challenge key German rivals, such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, in the high performance arena.

BMW has the well-received M-Class, while Mercedes-Benz has AMG, which have both developed reputations for unique and deft specialized engineering. Jaguar Land Rover, however, is ready to match its German competitors with SVO or Special Vehicle Operations and its new SVR badge, which made its debut last year on an ultra-luxurious Range Rover vehicle.

The Leader in Global Automotive News!

Mark Stanton, director of JLR’s SVO, operations said the next step for the company is to remake a Jaguar F-Type into a SVR, the vehicle that will be the fastest Jaguar ever built with a top speed of 200 miles per hour. JLR has set up a special base for the SVO operation, said Stanton. (more…)

Mercedes Ramps Up Performance With E43 AMG

AMG light package set to debut in New York later this month.

by on Mar.11, 2016

The 2017 Mercedes-AMG E43 will make its first appearance at this month's NY Auto Show.

We’ve barely had time to consider the mainstream versions of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class but the German maker is already rolling out the first of what will be several AMG editions.

Part of a new line-up of what might be dubbed “AMG Light” offerings, the 396-horsepower 2017 Mercedes-AMG E43 puts a premium not only on safety but an extensive array of new safety technologies. That’s in keeping with the strategy of launching breakthroughs with the big S-Class and then going even further with each subsequent model that follows.

The Last Word!

“The new AMG E43 offers impressive driving dynamics coupled with cutting-edge efficiency. Twin turbocharging, features adopted from motorsport and characteristic AMG design immediately indicate to our customers that the new E-Class from AMG offers pure Driving Performance coupled with cutting-edge technology and intense emotion,” said Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Mercedes Working Up 1,000 HP Supercar

Two alternate versions reportedly under development.

by on Nov.30, 2015

The Mercedes-McLaren SLR was first unveiled in 2003. It's shown here during a debut drive.

The new Mercedes-AMG GT is an intimidating beast, meant to challenge the likes of the venerable Porsche 911. But it’s not a true replacement for two of the maker’s recent supercars, the SLR and SLS models.

Now, it seems, Mercedes wants to fill that gap and take advantage of the growing demand for vehicles that can deliver as much as 1,000 horsepower or more. According to a report in the well-connected German magazine, Auto Bild, Mercedes is looking at two alternatives that could push the pony count near, and perhaps into the four-figure range.

Firing on All Cylinders!

It would join a select group of so-called ultracars, including the Koenigsegg Agera and Bugatti Veyron. But it would take a very different approach when it comes to delivering all that muscle.

Mercedes’s performance division AMG has launched what it’s billing as a “long-term partnership” with Italian motorcycle manufacturer Agusta Motor SpA. The deal will give Mercedes-AMG GmbH a 25% stake in Agusta.

Exactly how the alliance will work remains to be seen – though Mercedes had a previous alliance with another high-performance bike maker, Ducati, before that Italian firm was snapped up by rival automaker Audi. Indeed, Mercedes is given credit for the invention of the motorcycle itself.
