The BMW i8 roadster gets a soft top and a more powerful drivetrain with a longer-range battery

This week marks the opening of the Los Angeles Auto Show, the nation’s first big car show of the 2018 model-year. Over a dozen manufacturers will roll out new products in Tinseltown, some making their global debuts, others appearing for the first time in North America.

While there are a few surprises in store, a number of manufacturers have already offered insight into what they’ll introduce at the L.A. Convention Center. That includes Jeep, which will lift the covers off the much-anticipated new Wrangler sport-utility vehicle. No surprise, in fact, that utes will dominate the show’s schedule, though we’ll see some intriguing products on the passenger car side, including the third-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS and, for mainstream buyers, the new Mazda6.

LA Auto Show News!

The Los Angeles show has a tradition of focusing on green technology and there’ll be plenty of alternative tech to check out, including the new roadster version of BMW’s plug-in hybrid i8, as well as the new Infiniti Q50 which introduces the first variable-compression turbo engine.

Here’s a look at some of the most important introductions we’ll be seeing this week:

Mercedes-AMG Project One Takes F1 Onto the Streets

Mercedes-AMG's new hypercar is a 1,000-hp beast.

by on Sep.11, 2017

Mercedes-AMG's Project One Hypercar gets its Frankfurt intro with Dieter Zetsche, left, and Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton.

As a three-time Formula One World Champion, Lewis Hamilton knows fast. And he did little to hide his excitement as he drove the new Mercedes-AMG Project One hypercar out for its world debut at a Frankfurt Motor Show preview Monday night.

While Project One might look a little more than a classic Le Mans prototype than the F1 Silver Arrow Hamilton is used to driving, he noted they have a lot in common under the sheet metal and carbon fiber. That starts with a modified version of the Formula One Series’ Kinetic Energy Recovery System, or KERS, that will provide “more than” 1,000 horsepower when the hypercar hits the street in another couple years.

Future Products!

“It’s all about adrenaline,” declared Dieter Zetsche, head of the Mercedes brand and CEO of its parent company, Daimler AG, as he let the statistics roll off his tongue. Only the second model developed entirely in-house by AMG, the Project One car will launch from 0 to 200 kmh, or 125 mph, in less than six seconds, with a top speed currently rated at “over 350 kmh,” or just over 217 mph. Mercedes Teases Frankfurt Debut of Project One Hypercar

Two-seater will borrow F1 tech to top 1,000 hp.

by on Sep.01, 2017

The AMG Project One will rely on a compact V-6 and four electric motors to reach over 1,000 hp.

How fast is too fast? Is there a limit to the horsepower one needs? We haven’t come close to the limits on either, it seems, and Daimler is set to prove that point with the debut of the eagerly-awaited Mercedes-AMG Project One hypercar in just a couple weeks.

Borrowing key powertrain technologies from the German marque’s dominant Formula One program, the limited-edition Project One cars are expected to make in excess of 1,000 horsepower and top out somewhere around 350 kmh, or 217 mph.

The Last Word!

The carefully crafted teaser image released by Mercedes today gives a hint of what the hypercar will look like as it races towards you. One of the most surprising details is the unusual placement of the familiar Mercedes tri-star, almost certainly for aerodynamic benefits. While the Project One may draw from Formula One, the overall look is more like that of a Le Mans prototype. That should be no surprise, of course, as you can’t fit two in an F1 car.
