Back to the Future? DeLoreans Going Back into Production

Manufacturers settle with DeLorean estate.

The DeLorean is back! Unfortunately, time travel isn't possible in the new replicas ... just as it wasn't in the original version of the cars.

Ready to head “Back to the Future?” Three decades after that iconic ’80s movie made its debut, and 34 years after automotive maverick John Z. DeLorean’s eponymous car company built its last vehicle, the controversial DMC-12 is about to go back into production.

Or, at least, a reasonable facsimile. That’s the plan of a small company based in Humble, Texas – which recently settled a long-running lawsuit filed by DeLorean’s heirs. Reviving the name, DeLorean Motor Co., it hopes to have the first of its stainless steel replicas on the road next year – albeit without a flux capacitor.

What a Concept!

“It’s fantastic. It is a game-changer for us. We’ve been wanting this to happen,” DeLorean CEO Stephen Wynne told TV station KPRC2 in Houston. (more…)

The future is now…but it doesn’t look like it was supposed to.

Back to the Future - the DeLorean DMC-12 with co-stars Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox.

Just in time for “Back to the Future Day,” the estate of the controversial automaker John DeLorean has settled a lawsuit over the use of his name.

DeLorean, a one-time General Motors executive went off to create his own sports car company in 1985. A few years later, he was caught up in an FBI sting, allegedly trying to sell a suitcase full of cocaine to keep the venture alive. The DeLorean Motor Co. subsequently collapsed, but one of its stainless steel sports cars became famous for its central role in the time travelling comedy-adventure series, “Back to the Future.”

The Future is Now!

In the second of the three films, hero Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, launches into the future – more precisely October 21, 2015 – where he finds such things as floating hoverboards, home fusion kits and self-drying jackets. The future, it seems, isn’t what it used to be. (more…)

Lexus Shows off Working Hoverboard

Superconducting "cryostats" allow board to float around a "hoverpark."

Skateboarder Ross McGouran shows off the capabilities of the prototype hoverboard.

Lexus is, quite literally, going Back to the Future, showing off a working version of the levitating skateboard actor Michael J. Fox’s character got to ride in the 1989 sci-fi adventure.

But don’t race to your local sports shop to try to buy one. The Toyota luxury brand isn’t ready to bring the concept to market. And even if it does one day, you’ll need a specially equipped skatepark to use the new hoverboard.

Pushing the Boundaries!

“I’ve spent 20 years skateboarding, but without friction it feels like I’ve had to learn a whole new skill, particularly in the stance and balance in order to ride the hoverboard. It’s a whole new experience,” said pro skateboarder and hoverboard test rider Ross McGouran.
