A Second Bentley Ute? Flood of New Luxury SUVs on the Way

Segment is growing faster than most.

by on May.05, 2015

Even though it hasn't hit dealer showrooms, Bentley is so enamored with its soon-to-be-released SUV, it's thinking of adding a second to its line-up.

Think the idea of a Bentley SUV is hard to fathom: How about two utes from the stately British marque? That’s one of the maker’s two top priorities, according to Bentley CEO Wolfgang Durheimer.

And Bentley is far from alone. Porsche already has two utes in its line-up with the launch of the 2015 Macan. Rolls-Royce has confirmed it has an all-wheel-drive model in development. And even Lamborghini and Aston Martin appear ready to join the fray.

Mercedes-Benz Taps AM General to Build R-Class SUV

Alabama plant runs out of production capacity.

by on Jan.28, 2015

Mercedes-Benz is shifting R-Class production to AM General's plant in northern Indiana.

Mercedes-Benz U.S. International’s problem is AM General LLC’s gain. The German automaker is out of manufacturing space at its Tuscaloosa, Alabama, plant so it’s tapping AM General to build the R-Class Grand Tourer at its plant in northern Indiana not far from Chicago.

Mercedes-Benz said booming sales have forced it to reorganize production of its sport utility vehicles and it plans to expand production capacity in the U.S. by utilizing the AM General plant in Mishawaka, Indiana, just outside of South Bend.

Trucks, SUVs Dominating $50,000 Price Point

TrueCar says pickups, utes moving into the luxury territory.

by on Dec.11, 2014

Ford's F-150 tops the list of vehicles sold at a price topping $50,000 this year.

The perception of what constitutes a “luxury vehicle” may be changing, especially if price is the top factor, according to TrueCar, Inc.

The car selling service says that when it comes to sales of vehicles with prices exceeding $50,000 most would think German luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz would hold the top spots, but it’s just not so.

Truck Stop!

“Conventional wisdom says German premium brands would dominate the list of top-selling vehicles over $50,000,” said John Krafcik, president of TrueCar. “The reality is that this price segment of the market is dominated by American pickups and SUVs sold through non-premium brand dealers.” (more…)

VW’s New Touareg Outfitted to Fit in with High-End SUVs

Maker’s sport-ute gets facelift, new technology.

by on Dec.08, 2014

Volkswagen is looking to compete in the high-end SUV market with a freshened Touareg that includes a boatload of safety and convenience technologies.

Volkswagen of America had been rolling along toward some ambitious sales targets when a decided shift away from cars to crossovers and sport utility vehicles robbed it of its forward momentum and put more pressure on its own SUVs, such as the Touareg.

While facing competition from SUVs such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mercedes-Benz ML and Acura MDX, which have been overhauled in the last couple of years, VW still believes the Touareg can still hold its own.

Infiniti Brings Luxury to New Level with QX80 Limited

SUV aims for private jet-like opulence.

by on Apr.17, 2014

Infiniti is attempting to redefine the luxury SUV market with the new QX80 Limited it introduced today at the New York International Auto Show.

Sometimes having a fully loaded luxury SUV isn’t enough. Fortunately, Nissan’s luxury division, Infiniti, has a solution to this kind of dilemma: the new 2015 Infiniti QX80 Limited.

The new Infiniti QX80 Limited starts with a fully equipped 2015 QX80 – which receives a major redesign for the model year itself – then adds subtle exterior upgrades and an interior that wouldn’t be out of place in an ultra-executive boardroom or private jet, the company said.

High Luxury!

“The new QX80 Limited occupies a unique place in the luxury SUV market, offering an ultra-luxury interior in a three-row/seven-passenger contemporary platform,” said Infiniti Americas President Michael Bartsch. (more…)

Lincoln Breathes New Life into Aging Navigator

Full-size luxury ute gets first significant update in half a decade.

by on Jan.23, 2014

The update to the 2015 Lincoln Navigator marks the biggest makeover since 2009 to the full-size ute.

This story has been updated to note the price increase of the Lincoln Navigator’s most direct competitor, the Cadillac Escalade

It helped launch an entirely new market segment and introduced the concept of “bling” to the auto industry, but in recent years, the once-prized Lincoln Navigator has become little more than an after-thought in the luxury car market.

Now, as it sets out to rebuild its struggling Lincoln brand, parent Ford Motor Co. aims to breathe new life into the big Navigator with the most significant update to the full-size luxury sport-utility vehicle in five years.  But a sneak peek at the 2015 Navigator raises questions about whether the planned changes go far enough at a time when the big Lincoln’s most direct competitor, the Cadillac Escalade, is getting a far more extensive makeover.

Your Inside Source!

The Navigator originally debuted 17 years ago and “helped define the full-size luxury segment,” proclaimed Andrew Frick, Lincoln’s marketing manager, during a media background session on the 2015 SUV – which will be formally unveiled at the Chicago Motor Show next month. The update, he added, “will bolster” a product that had lost a significant amount of ground in recent years as it grew old and faced more competition from players as diverse as Caddy’s Escalade, the Infiniti QX80, the Mercedes-Benz GL and Lexus LX570.

Only 100 Autobiography Black Models slated for the US market in 2014.

by on Nov.19, 2013

Range Rover nudges the $200,000 mark with its most expensive model ever, the Autobiography Black.

You’ll have to move fast – and hope to have a big chunk of available change – if you plan to get one of the new Range Rover Autobiography Black models. The British marque plans to import only 100 of what will be the most expensive version ever of the flagship SUV for 2014.

You may also need a cue card to remember the formal name of the new offering, officially dubbed the Range Rover Long-Wheelbase Autobiography Black edition. The good news is that for $185,000 – before delivery charges, taxes and other fees – you’ll also get the longest list of standard features ever found on a Range Rover.

The basic shape is familiar, picking up with the all-new, all-aluminum version of the Range Rover introduced for the 2013 model-year. To broaden the big ute’s appeal – especially in China where affluent motorists are more often than not using chauffeurs – parent Land Rover has introduced a new long-wheelbase version for the ’14 model-year.

Spy Shot: 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe

New model full-size SUVs get extensive makeover.

If this spy shot of the next generation Chevy Tahoe is any indication, General Motors plans major changes in the design of its 2014 model-year full-size SUV lineup, which includes Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade.

Though the camouflage covering the vehicle is extensive, hiding much of the new sheet metal, some differences from the current models can be seen clearly. Multiple horizontal bars fill the familiar grille design, with its shield-like outline, centered “Bow Tie” emblem and heavier center bars.

Flanking the grille are new headlight composites with over and under headlights and LED running lights. The front fascia will also feature a flatter face on the bumper grille housing rectangular parking lamps.

Porsche Betting Macan Will Be Its Best-Seller

New crossover could account for 40% of maker’s volume.

by on Sep.13, 2012

Porsche has offered just a sketch of the Macan but could reveal more at the upcoming Paris Motor Show.

Porsche is clearly counting on the new Macan crossover to deliver big next year, accounting for perhaps 40% of its total global sales volume, a significant feat for any vehicle, never mind an all-new and untested product.

Named for an Indonesian tiger, the Macan is a downsized counterpart to the long-popular Porsche Cayenne and is based on the same platform as the Audi Q5.  Porsche promises it will “combine all sports car characteristics with the benefits of an SUV.”

The benefits to Porsche, in fact, will be on the bottom line, the maker now telling suppliers to tool up to provide parts for 75,000 of the crossovers next year.  That’s a big jump from Porsche’s original forecast that it would sell just 45,000.
