The new Mercedes-Benz G-Class gets a makeover for the 2018 model year.

Daimler AG has updated its G-Class sport utility vehicle, which like the Jeep Wrangler, began its life more than 40 years ago as a military vehicle but is now one of the most coveted vehicles in the Mercedes-Benz model line.

The G-Class or Geländewagen or G-Wagen as its now known was developed as cross-country vehicle for use in remote places such as the desert or Arctic region is a midsized, boxy style SUV that is built for Daimler by Magna-Steyr in Graz, Austria.

The redesign, which is described as the most extensive in the vehicle’s long history and includes a more spacious cabin, maintains the ute’s iconic elements to give the G-Class its unique appearance such as distinctive door handles, exterior protective strip, exposed spare wheel on the rear door and the prominent indicator lights. Lego My New Land Rover Discovery

New ute makes record debut.

The new Land Rover Discovery makes its debut alongside a replica of London's Tower Bridge using nearly 6 million Lego blocks.

It took nearly 6 million Lego blocks to set the stage for the debut of the all-new Land Rover Discovery.

The new seven-seat SUV, which replaces the old LR4 model, got a novel send-off ahead of its Paris Motor Show debut, emerging alongside the largest Lego structure ever built – a reproduction of London’s familiar Tower Bridge that took 5,805,846 of the blocks. That was enough to stretch from London to Paris, earning it a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

That said, Land Rover isn’t playing around. The three-row Discovery is the latest in a fast-growing line-up of luxury utes from the British-based, Indian-owned automaker. It joins the smaller Discovery Sport model launched a year ago, with a third “Disco” variant still in the works. (more…)

Bentley Reveals EXP 9 F Luxury SUV

Bentley rolls the EXP 9 F SUV concept into Geneva.

Luxury makers normally dribble out new products from an eyedropper, but Bentley’s got a big year going, as it demonstrated today with the launch of two new offerings at the Geneva Motor Show – notably including the maker’s first-ever sport-utility vehicle.

Technically, the Bentley EXP 9 F is a concept vehicle, but don’t let that fool you.  The British maker’s CEO Wolfgang Durheimer has made it abundantly clear that this project is his top priority and will come to market before the down-market sedan that had been favored by his predecessor.

And with the apparent support of Bentley’s German parent, Volkswagen AG, it is expected to offer a production version of the EXP 9 F with an assortment of drivetrains that could include the marque’s familiar W12, its new V-8 and even a plug-in hybrid.

That new V8, incidentally, is also playing a starring role in Geneva this year – here under the hood of Bentley’s new GTC convertible.  The 8-banger is a key part of the luxury brand’s bid to drive up its less than stellar fuel economy.
