First Drive: 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK

In hindsight, the future is bright, indeed.

by on Jul.12, 2012

Though a mid-cycle refresh, Mercedes makes some notable changes to the 2013 GLK.

When Mercedes-Benz launched the then new GLK in 2009, the auto industry was still in a bad way.  Sales were down in every segment, and some questioned the sanity of the German maker for launching a premium, small, SUV into the worst recession the industry had seen in at least half a century.

But hindsight is always 20/20, and the segment is rife with competitors, most notably the BMW X3 and Audi Q5.  Both are solid vehicles, but both need to be very afraid of the 2013 GLK 350, a mid-cycle update that is better in every way than its predecessor.

Let’s start with styling. The 2009 GLK looked like a mini G Wagen (which Mercedes says is the bloodline vehicle for the GLK).  The 2013 model maintains the Gelandewagen’s rugged appeal, but adopts the swoopy look that now adorns many other Mercedes models, including the 2013 SL550 sports car.

First Look: Infiniti JX Concept

The more the merrier with maker’s first three-row CUV.

by on Aug.19, 2011

Infiniti is betting the styling of the new JX crossover will help it stand out in the CUV crowd.

With the upcoming launch of its 7-passenger JX crossover, Infiniti hopes to make up for lost time.

The upscale arm of Nissan Motor Co. has long been an also-ran in the luxury market but has been gaining significant traction, in recent years, as it expands its line-up.  Getting into the 3-row crossover segment will put Infiniti on a lot more shopping lists, company officials suggested during a preview in Pebble Beach.

The launch of the Infiniti JX is still some months away, but the event offered a good look at what was officially described as a “concept” vehicle, but don’t worry if you like what you see, hinted Nissan’s corporate design chief Shiro Nakamura, saying, “It is almost identical to what will be in Infiniti showrooms less than one year from now.” (more…)

Infiniti Offers Tease of New JX Crossover

Maker officially lifts the covers at Pebble Beach.

Infiniti will reveal the JX in all its glory at the upcoming Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

Like an “exotic” dancer, Infiniti is giving us only the briefest look at its upcoming JX crossover, one little glimpse at a time, with the maker only planning to fully open the kimono at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August.

After providing a stylized tease of the new 7-passenger luxury CUV, a few months back, the Nissan luxury division has dropped this new front-end close-up into our e-mail box and we thought readers might find it tantalizing.

The JX is set to become one of three all-new models that Infiniti has promised to bring to market over the next several years.  The list also includes a luxury take on the more mainstream Nissan Leaf, which will likely show up by 2013.

While it takes a little creative thinking, a closer look at this image reveals a fair bit about the three-row Infiniti JX.  For one thing, it shares the sculpted design cues of the brand’s more recent concepts, like the Etherea, and the sweeping projector headlamps are clearly in tune with the likes of the Infiniti EX and FX models.
