Cadillac Counting on New Product to Reverse Slump

New Caddy boss expected to accelerate product expansion plans.

by on Jul.30, 2014

The new Cadillac crest - minus the wreath - debuts on the 2015 ATS Coupe.

“New product is the lifeblood of any brand,” said Jim Vurpillat, the marketing director for Cadillac, as he took a break during a media drive of the luxury maker’s new ATS Coupe.  He and the rest of Cadillac’s management team certainly have to hope so after the unexpected slide the General Motors division has taken so far this year.

The ATS Coupe, a new line of performance models, a flagship sedan, a compact crossover and other new products are moving their way through the Caddy pipeline. But the brand could see the pace of that rollout accelerate in the near future under the guidance of a new global brand boss who will officially join the Caddy team later this week.

Johan de Nysschen, most recently the CEO of Nissan’s Infiniti division and before that head of Audi of America, was brought in as part of a plan to give Cadillac more independence from GM. And company insiders suggest that the South African-born executive negotiated a deal that will also give Caddy more of the product it needs to compete against aggressive German rivals Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi, as well as Infiniti, Lexus, Lincoln and luxury upstart Hyundai.

First Look: Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG Coupe

Redefining the luxury flagship.

by on Jul.14, 2014

Mercedes brings back the V-12 in its S65 AMG Coupe.

With its big V-12 putting out 621 horsepower and a raft of luxurious and high-tech features filling the cabin, Mercedes-Benz is out to redefine the concept of an automotive flagship as it rolls out the new S65 AMG Coupe.

It’s the latest variant of the S-Class line-up first introduced a year ago, and is clearly meant to shore up the Teutonic maker’s reputation as king of the premium luxury segment. The S-Class sedan launched a year ago has been handily outselling competitors such as the BMW 7-Series and Audi A8.

Mercedes added a new 2-door version earlier this year, renaming the CL the S-Class Coupe. Along with the “base” model it recently launched a new 8-cylinder AMG version, the S63 AMG. The 2015 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG caps the line-up.

Cadillac Adds New ATS Coupe to Line-Up

New 2-door expected to be nimbler, "more fun to drive."

by on Jan.14, 2014

Cadillac has beefed up the performance and handling of the new-for-2015 ATS Coupe.

Cadillac’s downsized ATS sedan is about to be joined by a new coupe – which is making its debut today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. And it promises to be a seriously fun ride.

The 2015 ATS Coupe is the smallest 2-door ever offered by Caddy, and it follows a very different design direction from the earlier, over-the-top CTS Coupe and reflects the general toning-down of the edgy Art & Science design language Cadillac first introduced more than a decade ago.

“What you see is a clear progression for the brand,” explains Andrew Smith, Cadillac’s new executive design director, adding that the goal was to blend the familiar Cadillac hard creases on softer, more “subtle forms.”

Rolls-Royce Reveals New Wraith

“Athletic” coupe is fastest Rolls ever.

by on Mar.05, 2013

The new Wraith is the fastest and most powerful Rolls-Royce ever introduced.

The European automotive market may be melting down but you’d be hard-pressed to tell by the wide range of exotic sports and luxury cars that have been making their debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.

Among those weighing in are Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti and in an exclusive corner of the show floor, Rolls-Royce.  After teasing its all-new entry for the better part of a month, the British maker finally offered up a first clear look at its new Wraith luxury coupe.

As one might expect, the new offering maintains the luxurious features one might expect from the marque, the high-end division of Germany’s BMW. There’s plenty of leather and wood – and some other intriguing details such as a starlight headliner and a transmission that can use satellite guidance to track your route to improve shifts.

It seems like every automaker is trying to find a way to stand out in a crowded market – often by following the latest trend.  In Acura’s case, that means the luxury arm of Honda will be rolling out an all-new four-door sports coupe this fall.

This is the first official look at the 2010 Acura ZDX, which made a thinly-disguised debut  as we said at the New York Auto Show, last spring, in concept car trim.  Both show car and production model share the oversized “panoramic” glass roof, as well as hidden rear door handles and outsized fender flares – another styling theme that has swept through the luxury segment.

The design puts a premium on flexibility, the five-seater coupe-like sedan appears to boast substantial interior space for passengers fore and aft, but there’s also a hefty cargo compartment that can be expanded, Acura notes, to handle golf bags and other long objects, by removing the cargo bay’s side panels.  There’s also an under-floor hidden storage compartment.
