Little Spyker Reveals Some Big Plans

Dutch exotic automaker adding new models, switching engine source.

by on Nov.21, 2016

Spyker is back and perhaps better than ever with its new C8 Preliator. The convertible version is scheduled to debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

By traditional automotive metrics, the little Dutch company Spyker doesn’t even qualify as a rounding error. In fact, by comparison, Ferrari looks like a mass-market brand.

But that hasn’t stopped Spyker and its founder and CEO Victor Mueller from thinking big. With its latest model, the C8 Preliator sold out, the Dutch company is laying out plans for its next product line – and more to come. It’s also getting ready to switch to a new engine source after long depending upon Audi.

Auto Show News!

The first new product will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show next March, a convertible version of its current sports coupe that will be dubbed the Spyker C-8 Preliator Spyder. What’s to follow, well, Mueller would drop only vague hints. (more…)

Will Trump Unplug EVs?

U.S. could lose lead in battery-car market.

by on Nov.21, 2016

The Jaguar I-Pace is making its debut appearance at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week.

It certainly doesn’t look like your typical Jaguar. Indeed, its cab-forward proportions are decidedly different from most vehicles on the market today. That’s because the Jaguar I-Pace Concept making its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week was designed specifically to take advantage of its electric propulsion system — with its batteries and motors below the floor that translates into a much larger cabin than you’d normally expect.

Jaguar is just one of the many automakers displaying new battery-based vehicles at the L.A. Auto Show. There’s the next-generation Fortwo Electric Drive, the new Volkswagen e-Golf, which gets a 50% bump in range, and the pure electric version of the Hyundai Ioniq. Chevrolet is not only showing off the production version of the Bolt battery-electric vehicle, but also the numerous awards it collected last week, including Green Car of the Year and Motor Trend Car of the Year.

With dozens of new hybrids, plug-ins and battery-electric vehicles set to debut between now and 2020 it might seem to be a golden era for battery-based vehicles. But some observers wonder whether the push to electrify the automobile might suddenly be short-circuited by the election of Donald Trump, a man who has repeatedly denied climate change, declaring that global warming is a “hoax” created by the Chinese.

Genesis Pumps Up the G80 With New Sport Edition

Gets G90’s big twin-turbo V-6 and minor facelift.

by on Nov.18, 2016

The 2018 Genesis G80 Sport will hit U.S. showrooms sometime next spring, officials say.

Genesis, Hyundai’s new luxury brand, soon will be pumping a little more muscle out of its G80 sedan. The midsize model will be offered with the same, twin-turbo V-6 found in the flagship Genesis G90.

With the biturbo 3.3-liter engine, the Genesis G80 Sport will make 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. Current versions of the G80 turn out anywhere from 311 to 420 hp. While not the most powerful package, the lighter V-6 should add, as the name implies, a sporty lift to the mid-range model.

“It drives like a bat out of hell,” suggested Erwin Raphael, the executive in charge of the Genesis brand for the U.S. market, during an unscheduled preview of the G80 Sport at the Los Angeles Auto Show. (more…)
