Luxury brand looking toward the future.

by on Dec.16, 2016

Lincoln's renaissance continues with the arrival of the new Continental. The sedan is the brand's flagship.

With the new Continental finally on the street, Lincoln has delivered on the promise it made to launch four all-new products — make that five, with the decision to keep the big Navigator alive and an all-new version of the full-size SUV set to roll out around a year from now.

But, to bend the old cliché, what has Lincoln done for us lately? And, more importantly, what is it planning to do during the next several years? We’re likely to find out as early as the upcoming North American International Auto Show, a number of sources both inside Ford Motor Co. and close to the company tell TheDetroitBureau.com.

One thing that appears to be stuck on the back burner is the long-awaited rear-drive model. Lincoln has long been considering that option, possibly even coming up with a luxury coupe based on the latest Mustang platform. But sources say the Ford luxury brand is confident it can, like Audi and Volvo, do just fine with a mix of front- and all-wheel-drive products, the Navigator being the one exception. (more…)

Ford Reveals $1 Bil Investment for Lincoln

Maker promises dealers it will make luxury brand competitive.

The Lincoln Concept C small luxury car offers a hint of what's to come from the Ford brand.

Ford Motor Co. has promised its frustrated dealers that it will invest $1 billion in a bid to make the struggling Lincoln brand competitive, with an assortment of new products coming to market by 2014.

Once locked in a bitter, ongoing battle with Cadillac for dominance in the American luxury market, Lincoln has become little more than an afterthought in recent years. It currently holds less than 1% of the overall U.S. market, despite the addition of new and updated models like the MKS sedan, and MKX and MKT crossovers.  At the current sales pace of barely 7,000 vehicles a month, Lincoln could end the year with volumes of less than a third of luxury market leaders BMW and Lexus.

The “question is whether Lincoln will be viable,” IHS analyst Rebecca Lindland told the Detroit News, which revealed the new management commitment to Lincoln.

That was a relatively charitable way of putting things.  Earlier this month, General Motors CEO Dan Akerson suggested Lincoln is “over,” and that Ford might as well “sprinkle holy water over it.”
