The teaser image suggests the new Lexus IS will adopt the brand's L-finesse design language.

Lexus is the latest automaker to tease its upcoming announcement at the Beijing Auto Show, where it will reveal an all-new version of the entry-luxury IS line.

One of the oldest models in its line-up, the fourth-generation Lexus IS will “bring exciting breakthroughs,” the maker suggested in a terse statement. Among other things, it is expected to adopt a more dramatic design than the current model based on the maker’s new L-finesse styling language.

Lexus Adding New RC 350 Coupe

Performance RC F model may also be in offing.

by on Nov.04, 2013

Lexus adds an all-new line of coupes with the debut of the 2015 RC 350 and RC 300h.

Look for Lexus to introduce the all-new RC 350 coupe at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show – but calling this an entirely new model line isn’t entirely accurate.

As BMW has just done, splitting off the old 3-Series Coupe and rebadging it the 4-Series, so Lexus is doing with the two-door version of its familiar IS line.  But while the Lexus RC 350 will have fewer doors the images the maker has released in advance of the Tokyo show reveals that the coupe will have a significantly bigger and more dramatic version of the now-familiar Lexus “spindle” grille.

A Real Coup!

The interior, meanwhile, adopts a more refined and sporty appearance than the entry-oriented Lexus IS, with a more driver-oriented layout designed, says Lexus, to “enhance the fun-to-drive intention of the RC.”

First Drive: 2014 Lexus IS

This time it’s more than just plain vanilla.

by on May.23, 2013

The new sedan - the IS 250 shown here - adopts the Lexus spindle grille design.

It wasn’t all that long ago when Lexus dominated the U.S. luxury market, but despite its continuing strength in quality and customer service surveys, the Toyota luxury brand has been losing momentum to European makers BMW and Mercedes-Benz, never mind upstarts such as Audi.

It doesn’t help that the buzz around its vehicles has shrunk to something like a very faint hum, its sales more and more dependent on its primary crossover vehicle, the RX.  While that may be propping up the numbers, it also might trigger a sense of déjà vu for the sepia-tinged era when station wagons ruled the road.

Company officials, notably including Toyota President Akio Toyoda are clearly worried and looking for ways to kick-start the brand. Among other things, they’ve been talking a lot about passion, these days, something that Lexus translates as the more sporty design language that one finds on the newly restyled Lexus IS.  The good news is that with this entry-level sedan beauty is more than skin deep, the 2014 IS reminding us why Lexus soared to the top of the U.S. luxury market in the first place.

Toyota Recalling Over 1 Mil Vehicles

Separate safety actions involve defective airbags, faulty wipers.

by on Jan.30, 2013

The Lexus IS is targeted by one of two new Toyota recalls, the other affecting the Corolla.

Toyota says it is recalling a total of more than 1 million vehicles, including some late-model luxury cars, due to a pair of safety problems involving defective airbags and faulty windshield wipers.

The announcement comes during the same week the maker confirmed it regained its title in 2012 as the world’s best-selling automotive manufacturer.  But Toyota also had more vehicles recalled than any other automaker operating in the U.S. last year – the third time it has captured that dubious distinction in four years.

The new recall involves about 752,000 Corolla and Corolla Matrix cars sold in 2003 and 2004. According to Toyota, a control module is susceptible to short-circuiting. If that happens, it could cause their airbags and front seat pre-tensioners to inadvertently deploy.

Lexus Punches up Passion Quotient with 2014 IS

by on Jan.15, 2013

Lexus abandons staid for a more passionate design with the 2014 IS remake.

For the new Lexus IS, Chief Engineer Junichi Furuyama, flipped  conventional on its head.

“I adopted an entirely different approach to the development of the all-new IS,” IS Chief Engineer Junichi Furuyama said. “Specifically, it was to make an entertaining driving experience a major premise behind all aspects of performance.”

You hear the word, “passion” in Lexus circles a lot these days.

Lexus introduced its second-generation IS, meant to be a BMW 3-Series fighter, at the Detroit Auto Show today.

A shift in design direction that began with an all-new GS sedan two years ago now transforms the marque’s entry-level offering, the 2014 Lexus IS, which is making its debut at the North American International Auto Show.
