Lexus Hopes to Put Sporty LF-FC Hydrogen Car on the Road by 2020

The “luxury fuel-cell concept of the future.”

by on Jan.12, 2016

Lexus showed its own take on hydrogen power with the American debut of the LF-FC Concept.

With tough new emissions and fuel economy standards looming in front of them, automotive manufacturers are struggling to find ways to boost the efficiency of their vehicles. But now all of them are convinced that batteries are the answer. Toyota, for example, is hedging its bets with hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.

It recently put its first, the Mirai, on sale in Japan and the U.S., and during a news conference at the North American International Auto Show, the maker’s upscale Lexus brand showed its own take on hydrogen power with the American debut of the LF-FC Concept.

“It is the luxury fuel-cell concept of the future,” explained Akio Toyoda, the president of Toyota Motor Co., and the grandson of the automaker’s founder. (more…)

Lexus is heading back to the track. The Japanese luxury maker is hoping to replicate the success it had during a hard-charging, three-year program at the Daytona endurance series.

An all-new RC F GT3 made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Tuesday morning – alongside an only slightly less aggressive street performance model based around its mid-range GS sedan.

“We expect the GS F to accelerate our niche performance reputation,” declared Jeff Bracken, the Lexus general manager, during a news conference at Detroit’s Cobo Hall. (more…)

Lexus Upping Performance Quotient with New RC-F

"Back to the grind" takes on a new meaning.

by on Jan.08, 2014

Lexus is back in the performance game with the new RC F set to debut in Detroit next week.

With rare exception, Lexus isn’t a brand folks typically associate with performance.  The asterisk on the line-up was the original Lexus IS-F, a V-8-powered monster that gave German competitors like the M3 reason to keep a watchful eye on the rearview mirror.

With parent Toyota Motor Co. CEO Akio Toyoda promising to put more “passion” into the brand, Lexus is ready to show that the IS-F wasn’t a fluke.  It’s been hinting for weeks that something sinister was in the works and now we’re getting more than just a series of teasers as the Japanese luxury maker lifts the current on the new Lexus RC F.

Auto Show Insider!

The performance coupe, the maker asserts, is “giving new meaning to ‘back to the grind,” with a big V-8 engine that is expected to deliver something in excess of the original IS-F model’s 407 horsepower.  Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait for the formal debut during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next week to get precise numbers.

Lexus Teases New High-Performance F Model

Debut Detroit planned; is this the new RC Coupe?

by on Dec.09, 2013

Lexus offers a tease of its next F model.

Lexus has dropped a teaser that will likely have lots of folks scratching their heads over the next month trying to figure out what “the newest Lexus F model” actually will be.

The luxury arm of Toyota has been trying to engineer more performance into its products over the last several years, and with its various F models drawing in the sort of younger buyers it’s desperate to attract, there’s little surprise that Lexus has a big unveiling planned for the North American International Auto Show when it opens up in Detroit next month.

But, at least for the moment, we’re left with little more than this close-up of the front-left fender and a few tantalizing hints from Lexus, which declares, “Engineered from scratch, one performance layer at a time, the newest F model promises a bold, gritty, experience synonymous with the famed Lexus F heritage.”

Now It’s Official: Lexus Releases LF-Lc Pics

by on Dec.21, 2011

Lexus offers up an official image of the LF-Lc concept.

Well, Lexus has made it official.  Pics of the maker’s new concept car inadvertently leaked out as Road & Track magazine got ready to release its new issue.  So the maker decided the rest of us deserved a closer look and sent over the first official shots of the Lexus LF-Lc show car, rather than the close-up teaser that the Toyota luxury division had previously released.

While we’re now able to get a good look at the 2-door 4-seater Lexus still isn’t providing any pertinent details, hoping we’ll still show up at the maker’s Detroit Auto Show news conference next month.

Stay in the Know!

Nonetheless, a few relevant bits can be gleaned, as TheDetroitBureau.com reported earlier:

“…insiders offer hints it could be the concept version of an eventual replacement for the slow-selling Lexus SC430.

“As seen here a few specifics can be deduced from the images: the concept apparently opts for a targa top, rather than the folding hardtop of the awkward SC430.  Both vehicles appear to be roughly the same size and the new model maintains the 2-door design of the current hardtop cabrio.  But it appears to add two rear seats.  Functional?  Well, that remains to be seen.

Whoops! Lexus LF-Lc Concept Pics Leak Out

High-performance model to make Road & Track cover.

by on Dec.21, 2011

The Lexus LF-Lc concept was supposed to remain cloaked until its debut in Detroit next month.

Lexus has delivered a little holiday present – though it’s probably as much a surprise to the maker as anyone else.

Seems pics of the Lexus LF-Lc concept have leaked out well ahead of the planned unveiling at next month’s North American International Auto Show.  We found them thanks to our friends at Autoblog who, in turn, discovered them showing up as the cover story on the next issue of Road & Track magazine.

Unfortunately, we’ll still have to wait for full details about the concept vehicle Lexus has been teasing in recent days.  But insiders offer hints it could be the concept version of an eventual replacement for the slow-selling Lexus SC430.

As seen here a few specifics can be deduced from the images: the concept apparently opts for a targa top, rather than the folding hardtop of the awkward SC430.  Both vehicles appear to be roughly the same size and the new model maintains the 2-door design of the current hardtop cabrio.  But it appears to add two rear seats.  Functional?  Well, that remains to be seen.

The angular and aggressive front end clearly lifts on the latest L-Finesse design theme Lexus has adopted, as first seen on the maker’s new GS line.  According to a teaser release sent out in recent days by Lexus, the LF-Lc embraces “the new design direction embraced by Lexus.”

Like the old SC430, it was penned at the Lexus advanced design studios in Southern California.

At least one report has questioned whether the LF-Lc is borrowing the basic mechanicals and chassis of the new Toyota GT86 – which will be sold in the U.S. as the Scion FR-S.  It’s the product of a closely watched joint venture with Subaru, which will offer its version up as the new BRZ.

There appears to be a hybrid badge on the Lexus LF-Lc, though we’ll have to wait for more details there, as well.  But the maker has promised to offer a gas-electric version of virtually everything in its line-up, so that would be no surprise.
