Kia KCD12 Concept to Signal Plans for Large CUV

Debut planned in Detroit.

The Kia KCD12 concept vehicle takes aim at the large, high-line crossover segment.

Kia will roll out the latest in its long-running series of KCD concept vehicles at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next week.

Dubbed the KCD12, the show car will offer a solid glimpse of what the Korean carmaker has in mind for the full-size crossover segment, slotting in above its current Sorento model, a company source told TheDetroitBureau.com.

What a Concept!

Kia officials released this teaser image during this week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. An initial look suggests the KCD12 would be sized somewhere between a Toyota Highlander and Sequoia. But the concept vehicle appears to be targeting a more premium segment of the market.

Hyundai Reveals $74 Billion Investment Plan

Annual spending will exceed previous record by 35%.

Hyundai Motor Group is going to invest about $74 billion into the company during the next four years.

In an effort to expand its line-up and add much-needed production capacity, Hyundai Motor Group plans to invest almost $74 billion over the next four years.

The move was announced barely a week after Chung Moon-koo, the chairman of the group that controls both Hyundai and Seoul-based affiliate Kia, forecast the group will see its slowest growth in a decade as it deals with increased competition and a weaker global economy. Hyundai officials have also said that once-booming growth has been restricted by limited production capacity in key markets including North America.

At 81 trillion Korean won, the spending plan by the world’s fifth-largest automaker works out to a 35% annual increase for each of the four years compared with 2014’s previous record investment level of 14.9 trillion won. (more…)

Kia Shares More Details about 2015 Sedona

Kia dropped more hints about the 2015 Sedona, including that it will have sliding doors.

After a little tease for the curious a week ago, Kia decided to drop a few more details about its mysterious multi-purpose vehicle debuting at the New York International Auto Show next week today.

The first detail? The Sedona name lives on.

Kia Teases New Multi-Purpose Vehicle

Kia teases the replacement for its all-but-forgotten Sedona minivan, due to debut in NY this month.

With less than two weeks left before the New York Auto Show’s annual media preview begins our e-mailbox is suddenly getting flooded with news about new production models – and a raft of concept vehicles that could offer a hint of models to come.

Among the planned debuts, expect to see a new “midsize multi-purpose vehicle” from Kia, apparently a more acceptable alternative to the oft-derided term, minivan.

The Korean carmaker isn’t saying much, issuing little more than this teaser image and a terse release that suggests, “This global debut will challenge the segment and will offer the functionality to transport as many as eight passengers and their belongings while also serving as a purposeful offering for adventure seekers.” (more…)

Kia’s New Luxury Flagship Slow-Rolling into Dealers

Just 30% of dealers eligible to sell the new K900.

Kia is counting on the K900 to help reshape the maker's image among luxury buyers.

When Kia announced it was bringing the K900 to the to the market it wanted its new luxury flagship sedan to be seen on the same lofty level as a S-Class Mercedes or 7-Series BMW, including the dealership experience.

Well, some of the dealers are having some difficulty making the grade. In fact, according to an Edmunds.com report, only 30% of Kia dealers will be eligible to sell the K900 when it his showrooms in a few weeks.

Dealers wanting to sell the new marque ponied up $30,000 for specialized training and showroom display upgrades. The training is aimed at helping sales staffers relate all of the high-end features available on the new car: features not available on other Kia products. (more…)

The world of luxury automobiles is changing. There are more players in the segment than ever before, including makers that are better known for being affordable rather than luxurious. Kia is looking to be part of the “in” crowd with its first-ever luxury marque, the K900.

The South Korean automaker is counting on open-minded buyers looking for luxury at a great price to help the company gain a foothold in the segment against the likes of Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Kia Charges Up Optima Hybrid

Kia's Michael Sprague shows Chicago Auto Show attendees the newly updated Kia Optima Hybrid.

When Kia announced a mid-cycle refresh of its midsize Optima sedan for 2014, something was clearly missing. For reasons that went unexplained, the hybrid-electric version of the four-door maintained the old Optima styling.

The maker will finally correct that omission, previewing a late-entry 2014 Optima Hybrid this week at the Chicago Auto Show. But for those who were hoping to see Kia upgrade the underlying hybrid technology, well, that’s not in the cards for the moment.

Strong design has been the foundation of Kia’s growth in the past few years. While he has moved upstairs to a new job that put him in charge of design at both Kia and Hyundai, Peter Schreyer remains one of the industry’s influential designers and he is encouraging his designers around the world to build on the company’s design success.

For the North American International Auto Show, Kia debuted a lightweight concept car: the GT4 Stinger. The concept suggests that Kia’s management is thinking about building a sport car that could put a halo around the brand as a companion to the new Kia 900 luxury car unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto in November.

Kia Displays Latest Electronic Innovations at CES

Kia's User-Centered Device (UCD) uses a wide-screen, head-up display to give drivers information such as speed, navigation or traffic information.

Kia continues to find ways to grow its customer base whether its with pricing, improved quality and now it’s looking toward interactive technologies to differentiate the company and its vehicles from the pack.

The Korean maker showed a couple of concepts at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that can be used with its UVO system. The first is a User-Centered Device (UCD). The UCD uses a wide-screen, head-up display to give drivers information such as speed, navigation or traffic information across 18 inches above the instrument cluster. It’s joined by a 12.3-inch TFT-LCD display that provides the data in 3-D.

Kia Recalls 96,000 Sedona Minivans

Dealerships will fix corrosion problems.

Kia is recalling 96,000 Sedona minivan to repair a corrosion issue.

Nearly 100,000 Kia Sedona minivans are being recalled to fix problems related to corrosion in cold weather climates in the United States and Canada.

The recall affects Sedona minivans from 2006 through 2012 sold or registered in Canada and in 20 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., where salt is on the roads in winter.

The salt may cause the lower control arms near the wheels to rust and break due to salt exposure, causing loss of control, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). (more…)
