Kia generated plenty of excitement - and an award - with the debut of its new Stinger.

More than 40 new cars, trucks and crossovers made their debut at the North American International Auto Show during the event’s annual media preview, and while some are no more than basic transportation, many are “rolling sculpture…the equal of the work of an artist like Rodin,” said Dr. Philip Hessburg, founder of the annual Eyes on Design Awards.

They honor the most striking products to make their first appearance at Detroit’s Cobo Center each year, a jury of some of the industry’s top designers empowered to pick among the work of their peers.

Kia generated a bit of excitement last night with the debut of its new Stinger sport sedan.

If there’s anyone left who thinks Kia is all about mundane econoboxes they’re in for a shock when they get a good look at the Korean carmaker’s new Stinger sport sedan.

The fastback is based on the wildly popular Kia GT that made its original debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2011, the work of Kia’s design chief – and now vice chairman of both Kia and sibling Hyundai – Peter Schreyer.

It will also be one of the automaker’s most lavishly equipped offerings when it hits the road later this year.

Kia's GT4 Stinger Concept was developed in a bid to enhance the Korean carmaker's image.

It’s all in the concept – at least for many automotive show-goers who can’t wait to check out the latest concept vehicles that are on display at this year’s North American International Auto Show.

Nearly a dozen new ones are making their debut this year.  Some, like the new Toyota FT-1, are pure fantasy, designed to stretch the minds of automotive designers and the public alike.  Others, like the Acura TLX Concept, are thinly disguised production vehicles that will reach showrooms in a matter of months.

What a Concept!

“They’re one of the best reasons to come to a show like this,” said Charlie Vogelheim, a California journalist who stuck around after the official NAIAS Media Days this week to get a second, more casual peek at some of the vehicles making their debut in Detroit.
