Kia Reveals New Sportage

“The new face of Kia.”

by on Aug.28, 2015

New headlights and a modified "tiger nose" grille distinguish the gen-four Kia Sportage.

Kia is giving us a more detailed look at the next-generation Sportage, following up on the early renderings it released a couple weeks ago.

Set to make its formal debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month, the 2016 Kia Sportage will pick up on some of the cues we first saw in the form of the Niro Concept two years ago. The overall look offers a strong hint of where Kia’s global design chief Peter Schreyer will be taking the look of the brand in the years to come.

Auto Show News!

The biggest changes to the design of the fourth-generation Sportage can be seen in its face, notes Kia, “with the car’s headlamps no longer integrated with the grille for the new model, instead sweeping back along the outer edges of the more sharply-detailed (hood) and bolder wheel arches.”

by on Aug.18, 2015

Kia offers a tease of the new 2016 Sportage.

It must be the start of auto show season, as manufacturers begin releasing teaser images of new products to come. That includes Kia, which has offered up some renderings of the fourth-generation Sportage SUV it plans to introduce at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

The new Kia Sportage design includes an interior that the maker has dubbed its “most refined high-quality cabin yet.”

Overall, the new Sportage appears to adopt a more refined and sophisticated take on the “tiger nose” styling theme first penned by Peter Schreyer, now head of design for both Kia and its sibling Korean carmaker Hyundai.

Equinox Highlights the General’s Improvements

Chevy’s cute ute is a giant step forward, but small V-6 needs updating

by on Mar.27, 2012

Chevrolet Equinox

Of all the new vehicles General Motors introduced in the last four years, it could be this compact crossover where the automaker has shown the biggest turnaround.

This Equinox’s predecessor showed typical GM cost cutting. The interior was flimsy, poorly finished and full of hard plastics and lacked attention to detail. Its engines, particularly the V-6, lacked power and were coarse. And the styling was just blah. As was typical GM, it looked like a vehicle that GM had just gone through the motions to produce, so it could just get it done and into dealerships.

We Drive, We Review It!

Contrast that with this current version. It’s styled well enough to stand toe to toe with best small sport utes on the planet. Its base engine carries some of the most advanced technology of any engines made today. And the interior, while still mostly made of stiff plastics, is simply beautiful.

Sportage Shows Kia’s Styling Growth

Small sport ute is beautifully designed, but please, fix the ride.

by on Feb.10, 2011

Kia's new Sportage continues the automaker's recent trend toward building stylish vehicles.

For the better part of two decades Kia has made progressively better cars, but the design and styling still lagged.

The designs were often boring (previous generation Sportage) and sometimes strangely ornate (Amanti).

Not many people looked at a Kia, any Kia, and said “Wow, I want to drive that.”

Auto Reviews!

That is changing rapidly. The latest Optima is a smartly styled mid-size sedan. The Soul is a funky little box, the type of shape that hipsters love. And now, Kia has an swoopy new Sportage small crossover.

Kia says the new Sportage design takes its – sorry about this – cue from the Kue concept that was introduced at the 2007 North American International Auto Show. Well, OK. That sleek two-door concept did have a high beltline and a low roof, much like the new Sportage, but after that, they don’t have all that much in common.

Kia Uncovers a Quartet of New Products in New York – and Promises More

Korean maker aiming for big bump with 2011 Optima, exploring wagon options with Forte 5-door.

by on Apr.01, 2010

Kia has big expectations for its 2011 Optima midsize sedan, one of four new models unveiled at the New York Auto Show.

Aiming to build on its current momentum, Kia rolled out a quartet of new products at the New York International Auto Show – and promised more will soon follow, including the brand’s first hybrid-electric vehicle.

The most significant of the new offerings on display at Jacob Javits Center is the 2011 Kia Optima, an all-new update of the Korean carmaker’s midsize sedan.  Like its sibling brand, Hyundai, Kia has been putting an increasing premium on styling, and the ’11 Optima is no exception.

Auto Show News!

“This is a design to be benchmarked in the future,” declared Peter Schreyer, the German designer who has been leading the automaker’s move towards more expressive styling.  If anything, said several observers, after the news conference, the 2011 Kia Optima is more up-market and distinctive than the well-reviewed new Hyundai Sonata.

First Look: 2011 Kia Sportage

Debut planned for March Geneva Motor Show.

by on Feb.03, 2010

A sneak peek of the Euro-spec 2011 Kia Sportage, which debuts in Geneva, next month.

My, how time flies when you’re working the auto show circuit.  With the L.A. and Detroit events now past tense, we’re getting our reservations ready for Chicago, which stages its press preview next week.  But the folks at Kia are looking even further ahead and have just tipped us off to the launch of the 2011 Kia Sportage, planned for the Geneva Motor Show, in March.

Like its bigger Korean sibling, Hyundai, Kia is trying to shift styling directions.  Gone are the boxy derivative shapes of the past, it promises, touting the look of the 2011 Sportage as “embodying Kia’s newfound visual dynamism.”

That translates into a more wagon-like crossover, with a sweeping roof line, bold grille and over-sized fog lamp surrounds, among other details.  The 2011 Kia Sportage is longer, lower and wider than the previous model, with more interior passenger and cargo space, as well.
