With New Plant in India, Jeep Set to Build SUVs on Four Continents

All-new model planned for $280 million plant in Ranjangaon.

The new Renegade marked a turning point for Jeep which is producing it in Italy, rather than the US.

Little more than a domestic American brand just a few years ago, Jeep is going global, expanding both its distribution network to markets as far flung as Berlin, Beijing and Mumbai. It will soon have production facilities, meanwhile, on four continents.

The subsidiary of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles confirmed this week that it will invest $280 million as part of a joint manufacturing venture with India’s Tata Motors. The factory will produce several vehicles, including both the Jeep Grand Cherokee and an all-new model, company officials indicated.

Jeep – Imported From Italy

Next-gen “small Jeep” to be Produced Overseas.

The replacement for the Jeep Patriot and Compass will be produced in Melfi, Italy and share underpinnings with the new Fiat 500X.

This story has been updated following clarification from Chrysler about plans for Jeep.

A new small Jeep will be produced in Italy and then exported to the U.S. and other markets, according to Fiat/Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, a move the maker hopes will help improve capacity utilization as European car sales collapse.

While Marchionne did not specifically identify the Jeep product, company officials have since advised TheDetroitBureau.com that the new product would be an “additional model to the (brand) and not (a) replacement for the current Jeep Compass or Patriot models, as had been earlier reported.

The new products will be based upon a crossover chassis developed by Fiat and Chrysler using their new Small-Wide “architecture.”  That platform will be shared with several Fiat additions, the recently-introduced 500L and the new 500X.

Planned $1.4 billion investment follows news of $843 mil Chrysler investment in Indiana.

Marchionne planning to build Jeeps in Italy.

Chrysler and its Italian ally Fiat plan to team up in a European manufacturing venture that will expand the Jeep presence overseas.

Sergio Marchionne, who serves as CEO for both Chrysler and Fiat, says his company will invest $1.4 billion in the Mirafiori plant, in Turin, to permit the production of Jeep and Alfa-Romeo sport-utility vehicles.

The move could help Fiat achieve one of the critical benchmarks set by the Obama Administration as part of the Chrysler bailout last year.  Fiat currently holds a 20% stake in the long-troubled American maker.  Each of three key goals will boost that stake by 5%, including the requirement to boost Chrysler’s overseas sales.

But expanding cooperation between Fiat and Chrysler is critical for both companies to achieve the necessary sales volumes and economies of scale that Marchionne believes are necessary to compete in today’s global auto industry.  The Fiat brand is making a comeback in the U.S., after a two-decade absence, with next month’s launch of its 500 microcar.
