Jaguar Prepping 700-HP Hybrid F-Type

Leapfrogging Porsche.

A new Jaguar F-Type V6 S navigates the Circuito Navarra in Spain.

As regular readers might have noticed, hybrids are no longer for fuel economy anymore.  Well, not exclusively.  There’s a growing list of manufacturers using alternative technologies to add a big performance punch, as well, notably including Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche.

And you’ll soon be able to add Jaguar to that list, if the scuttlebutt proves accurate.  Borrowing a bit of technology from the now-cancelled C-X75 supercar program, Jaguar is reportedly working up a 700-horsepower hybrid driveline for the upcoming coupe version of the new F-Type.

The new drivetrain – if it makes it beyond the planning stage – would provide a significant bump over the still-new Jaguar F-Type convertible’s 495-hp V8 S model.  And it would bump the top speed from an already impressive 186 mph to something north of 200, according to British auto mag AutoExpress, which broke the story.

Jaguar-Land Rover North America's Andy Goss.

Long known for its powerful but gas-guzzling V-8s and V-12s, Jaguar is moving quickly on the development of more fuel-efficient small displacement engines as prepares to challenge its bigger luxury rivals, the maker’s chief U.S. executive said  during an appearance at the Chicago Auto Show.

Andrew Goss, president of Jaguar-Land Rover of North America, also said the company was working on the development of diesel engines and hybrid powertrains, which will help bolster the company’s fuel-economy record.

The development of the more fuel-efficient technologies is part of the British maker’s long-range plan to compete on all fronts with highly successful German brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi around the world and Lexus in the United States. “We are determined to make Jaguar a much more significant player in the luxury market,” he said during the Chicago Auto Show’s keynote session.

Jaguar Reveals New C-X16

Performance hybrid would be smallest Jag in half a century.

by on Sep.07, 2011

The C-X16 is a foot shorter than today's Jaguar XK.

Who says a hybrid can’t quicken your pulse.  Okay, most folks only get excited about a Toyota Prius when they realize they’re saving money at the gas pump.  But Jaguar is betting it can get a little adrenaline flowing with an exotic design that uses a hybrid powertrain to enhance its performance, as much or more than to deliver good fuel economy.

We’ve offered a tease of the Jaguar C-X16 already but now we’ve got the first official pics of the “Baby Jag” sports car that the maker plans to unveil at next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show.  The Ian Callum styling will clearly be familiar to Jag fans, taking the sleek XK to a new level of aero-swept design.

Drive on in!

The all-aluminum body and chassis measures just 175 inches nose-to-tail — or about 13 inches shorter than the current XK Coupe and four inches shorter than a Porsche 911 – and 51 inches tall.  It would be the smallest Jaguar since the 1954 XK120, in fact.  That is, if it goes into production.

“Jaguars have always been dramatically different,” says Callum. “With the C-X16 we have moved the current award-winning design language on to the next generation, creating a car that is the very essence of future Jaguar performance.”
