Infiniti Unveiling QX50 “Concept” at NAIAS

New CUV loads up the tech, including new AutoPilot and variable-compression engine.

by on Dec.30, 2016

The Infiniti QX50 Concept will reappear in 2017 -- largely unchanged -- in production trim.

It may be called a “concept,” but what you’ll see when the Infiniti QX50 debuts at the North American International Auto Show is darned close to what you’ll be getting in showrooms next year.

Heavily influenced by the earlier Infiniti Sport Inspiration Concept, the crossover coming to Detroit in little more than a week is meant to strike a “perfect balance between lust and logic,” according to the luxury marque’s chief designer, Alfonso Albaisa.

But the Infiniti QX50 Concept is more than just a styling exercise. It will introduce a variety of significant technical innovations, including the breakthrough variable-compression engine developed by parent Nissan, as well as Infiniti’s next-generation steer-by-wire system and near-autonomous driving capabilities.

First Drive: 2016 Infiniti QX50

An SUV by any other name.

At times, the auto industry has at least one thing in common with baseball: you can’t tell the players apart without a scorecard. That’s especially true with Infiniti, the Japanese automaker sowing plenty of confusion when it decided to rename familiar products like the old G and JX lines.

It’s hard to tell whether that’s the reason why sales of the Infiniti EX stumbled to a virtual halt after it was renamed the QX50 for 2014. Perhaps it was simply the result of a once-popular product growing old in hotly competitive segment. Whatever the reason, the luxury arm of Nissan Motor Co. is hoping to kick-start the crossover’s momentum with a modest, but much-needed refresh for the 2016 model-year.

Product, Product, Product!

The basic shape will immediately be familiar. Like the bigger Infiniti FX, the EX was one of the first crossover-utility vehicles to stop trying to pretend it was a classic SUV, instead putting an emphasis on styling, features and on-road manners. That part hasn’t changed. During a trip to San Diego to try out the 2016 Infiniti Qx50, off-road capabilities didn’t even merit a footnote.

Infiniti Stretches QX50 for 2016

Luxury brand ready to grow portfolio.

Design Director Alfonso Albaisa introduced the 2016 Infiniti QX50, the brand's new face for the hottest segment in the luxury market: compact crossovers.

You can’t tell the players without a scorecard, or so they once said about baseball. But that also applies to the line-up at Infiniti. The maker migrated to a new nomenclature a couple years back, complicating the process by adding a number of new models like the upcoming QX30 – which will be shown in concept form at this year’s New York International Auto Show.

Also making its debut is the newly updated Infiniti QX50 – which that scorecard might tell you was previously known as the EX35. It was one of the first entries into what has today become the hottest segment in the luxury market, the compact crossover.

Automotive Insight!

The model not only has a new name but also gets some significant updates for 2016, adding 3.2 inches to its wheelbase and plenty of additional room to its interior. It also gets a revised exterior that brings it more in line with the rest of Infiniti’s newest models. (more…)
