Former Audi Chief de Nysschen Sets Out to Reshape Infiniti

My goal is "unlock the potential of the brand," says new CEO.

by on Aug.22, 2012

Infiniti's new CEO, Johan de Nysschen will have the chance to completely reshape the brand.

More than two decades after its well-publicized debut, Infiniti remains a brand without a clear identity or well-defined mission.  But all that could soon change.

The Nissan luxury brand has moved its headquarters from Japan to Hong Kong and hired on long-time Audi executive Johan de Nysschen as it new global chief executive.  His challenge at Infiniti is not unlike what he faced at Audi, says the South African-born de Nysschen, taking an also-ran automaker and turning it a serious, top-tier contender.

“My goal is to unlock the potential of this brand,” de Nysschen told TheDetroitBureau.com during an interview in Pebble Beach, California prior to the annual Concours d’Elegance.  “One of the things I bring to the table,” he added, “is I’m willing to challenge” the established order.

Infiniti Offers Tease of New JX Crossover

Maker officially lifts the covers at Pebble Beach.

by on Jul.07, 2011

Infiniti will reveal the JX in all its glory at the upcoming Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

Like an “exotic” dancer, Infiniti is giving us only the briefest look at its upcoming JX crossover, one little glimpse at a time, with the maker only planning to fully open the kimono at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August.

After providing a stylized tease of the new 7-passenger luxury CUV, a few months back, the Nissan luxury division has dropped this new front-end close-up into our e-mail box and we thought readers might find it tantalizing.

The JX is set to become one of three all-new models that Infiniti has promised to bring to market over the next several years.  The list also includes a luxury take on the more mainstream Nissan Leaf, which will likely show up by 2013.

While it takes a little creative thinking, a closer look at this image reveals a fair bit about the three-row Infiniti JX.  For one thing, it shares the sculpted design cues of the brand’s more recent concepts, like the Etherea, and the sweeping projector headlamps are clearly in tune with the likes of the Infiniti EX and FX models.

Nissan Planning to Expand North American Capacity

Another U.S. plant a possibility; maker may also add Infiniti production.

by on Jun.29, 2011

With the Juke and a number of other new products coming to the U.S., Nissan needs to expand North American production capacity.

This story has been updated to include details on Nissan’s individual U.S. and Mexican plants and more on its plans for Infiniti.

Anticipating significant growth in both North and South America Nissan is working up plans that will call for the expansion of its current production base in the U.S. and Mexico, a senior official confirms, hinting that the maker may also resume production of Infiniti models in North America.

Nissan earlier this week unveiled a new 6-year plan, dubbed Power 88, that projects a 50% increase in global sales, with much of that expected to come from China, India and other emerging markets, but the U.S. and other parts of the Americas are central to what global marketing chief Simon Sproule acknowledges is an “aggressive” plan.

“What’s clear is if we look at our aspirations for growth in the U.S. and the role the (two Nissan) Mexican plants play for our growth in North and South America we’re going to have to have more capacity,” said Sproule, who was interviewed during a segment TheDetroitBureau.com hosted on Detroit NPR affiliate WDET-FM.

Infiniti Teases New JX Crossover

But full introduction will wait for later this year.

by on Apr.20, 2011

Infiniti's new JX won't get a formal reveal until late Summer, with sales starting in 2012.

There’ll be plenty of products rolling out over the next few days at the New York Auto Show – on top of the scores of introductions in Shanghai, earlier this week.

So, maybe it makes sense that Infiniti is only offering up a tease to whet our appetite for its new crossover, which it says won’t have its formal debut until late August.

Dubbed Infiniti JX, it’s a three-row luxury CUV that “will allow us to continue to expand the Infiniti brand’s presence in the Americas,” suggests Carlos Tavares, chairman, Nissan Americas.

The sketch shown here hints of a “crescent cut” greenhouse, with Infiniti suggesting the overall styling theme was “inspired by nature.”
