First Look: Infiniti Emerg-E

Shows battery cars can be Sex-E.

by on Feb.27, 2012

The Infiniti Emerg-E uses a mid-mounted range-extending drivetrain.

Who says battery cars have to be dull to downright boring? True, the Toyota Prius and Mitsubishi i likely won’t win design awards but the new Infiniti Emerg-E suggests that battery cars can be downright Sex-E.

The Infiniti concept is the latest in a string of concepts and production cars coming to the Geneva Motor Show next month that have already leaked out.

The luxury arm of Nissan Motor Co. has been hinting for some time that it plans to follow its bigger sibling and enter the electric vehicle market.  Exactly what role the Emerg-E will actually have in the Infiniti line-up remains to be seen but it’s certainly going to draw some attention with looks that are more than a little reminiscent of the new McLaren MP4-12C.

Tackling the News!

But instead of a 600-horsepower small-block V-8, the Infiniti Emerg-E features a range-extended electric drivetrain.  Details are set to follow but if you look closely at the images here you’ll notice the mid-mounted gasoline engine side of that powertrain is clearly visible beneath the show car’s all-glass roof.

Enchanted April, unsurpassable automobiles.

There’s something about spring in Northern Italy that makes you feel like you’ve stepped onto a movie set.  Maybe it’s the soft light or the gentle breeze as our boat slowly rounds a bend on Lake Como and the lush grounds of Villa d’Este suddenly come into sight.

At first, the palatial hotel, with its trompe l’oeil columns, dominates the vista, but as we draw closer, we remember the reason we’re here, dozens of classic cars sprawling across the estate’s grounds.

The Concorso Eleganza Villa d’Este is neither the first classic car show of the season, nor the largest.  But it is perhaps the most charming and delightful, a setting even more lovely than the grounds of Pebble Beach and a collection of rare and amazing automobiles that few, if any, other Concours can match.

by on Apr.06, 2009

For now, it's just a concept vehicle, but will the well-reviews Infiniti Essence have a role in the Nissan luxury division's global expansion?

For now, it's just a concept vehicle, but will the well-reviews Infiniti Essence have a role in the Nissan luxury division's global expansion?

They’re studies in contrast; the upscale Japanese marques Lexus and Infiniti launched the same day, at the Detroit Auto Show, 20 years ago, but while one has become a major success story, the other continues to struggle.

But finally, after two decades as the luxury market also-ran, Infiniti is beginning to show some momentum, thanks to a flood of new resources provided by its parent, Nissan Motor Co.

During its first two decades, “They didn’t give Infiniti the attention the luxury brand deserved,” acknowledges Ben Poore, the new vice president and general manager of the Infiniti Business Unit.  In fact, a decade ago, Nissan gave serious consideration to pulling the plug on the luxury unit, entirely, though then-new CEO Carlos Ghosn decided to give it a reprive.
