New Hyundai Elantra Makes Early Debut in Korea

U.S. version to premier at LA Auto Show.

by on Sep.21, 2015

The Korean Hyundai Avante will morph into the U.S. Hyundai Elantra in time for the LA Auto Show.

We’re not supposed to see the all-new Hyundai Elantra until it makes its splashy debut at the L.A. Auto Show in November. But if you ignore the “Avante” badge on the new mode that has just been unveiled in the Korean carmaker’s home market, well, you’ve got a good guess of what the new Elantra will look like.

For those who were disappointed when the latest-generation Hyundai Sonata adopted a more conservative design, don’t worry. The new Elantra maintains the edgy styling that made it such a standout in the traditionally stodgy compact sedan segment when the current model debuted a few years back.

Product News!

The new Hyundai Elantra will also grow a wee bit larger, add a variety of new high-tech features – such as emergency auto braking — and likely deliver a little bit better performance and fuel economy.

The new Hyundai AG is based on the maker's more mainstream Grandeur/Azera model.

Increasingly intent on becoming a player in the luxury car market, Hyundai has pulled the wraps off a new large car, codenamed AG, designed to take on high-line competitors such as BMW and Audi.

The Korean carmaker has already pushed into the luxury market with the flagship Equus and mid-range Genesis – the latter newly updated for 2015. But senior company officials have confirmed plans to expand their line-up of upmarket offerings.

The new sedan making its debut at the Busan Motor Show, however, is targeted specifically at the Korean luxury market which has seen a surge in growth among imports like BMW, Audi and Mercedes.  Codenamed the AG, the new Hyundai offering is not expected to be shipped to the U.S. Other new luxury offerings are under development for export, sources with the maker told

First Official Look: 2015 Hyundai Sonata

Larger, more mature design, more new features.

Hyundai pulls the wraps off the all new 2015 Sonata during a preview in Korea.

It’s turning into a big year for the folks at Hyundai. Not only is the Korean carmaker set to start selling its next-generation Genesis luxury sedan, but it’s also getting ready to roll out an all-new version of the Sonata line.

Long an also-ran in the midsize segment, the outgoing Sonata was a real game-changer for Hyundai, showing that the maker could build more than just base econo-boxes.  It was surprisingly well-equipped for the segment, still reasonably affordable – and it introduced the maker’s distinctive Fluidic Sculpture design language.

Automotive Insight!

We got to see the updated styling approach, Fluidic Sculpture 2.0, with the new 2015 Hyundai Genesis, and the basic language carries over to the 2015 Hyundai Sonata, starting with the more distinctive grille, but also translating into a design that is a far bit more subdued – mature, if you prefer – than the over-the-top creases and curves of the outgoing midsize sedan.
