BMW Studies Options for an M Hybrid

But near-term focus is on downsized, turbocharged engines.

by on Jun.10, 2014

The 2015 BMW M3 gets a smaller, turbo engine.

Among the many products offered by a marque that bills itself “the ultimate driving machine,” it’s those branded with the vaunted “M” badge that best live up to that boast.

In recent years, BMW has significantly expanded its line-up of M offerings, including the new M3 and M4 models that go on sale this month. But those two high performance products reveal an ongoing shift in strategy for the M brand-within-a-brand, a move away from big-block naturally aspirated engines, to more technically sophisticated powertrains that are downsized and turbocharged.

BMW is by no means alone. There have been reports that General Motors may take a similar route with the next-generation Corvette. Acura Introduces New Sport-Hybrid Performance System for RLX Flagship

Hybrid mileage, V-8 performance, sports car handling, Acura claims.

The 2014 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD.

Acura’s flagship RLX sedan is about to gain a new level of sophistication – as well as improved performance and fuel economy – with the debut of the new Sport Hybrid SH-AWD drive system at the LA Auto Show.

The 2014 Acura RLX becomes the first Honda product line to use the new three-motor hybrid system, an even more advanced version of which will be used to power the next-generation Acura NSX supercar. While the gas-electric system is expected to improve fuel economy compared to a conventional gasoline engine, Acura’s new SH-AWD technology also promises to boost both performance and handling by being able to direct power to both the front and rear axles of the 2014 RLX.

The new version of the RLX will debut the latest of three new hybrid drivetrains developed by Honda to replace its original Integrated Motor Assist, or IMA system.  Each is targeted at a particular segment of the market, from the low-cost single-motor system in the Honda Civic to the new twin-motor drive of the 2014 Honda Accord to the new 3-motor hybrid that will be focused on the Acura brand.

Jaguar Prepping 700-HP Hybrid F-Type

Leapfrogging Porsche.

A new Jaguar F-Type V6 S navigates the Circuito Navarra in Spain.

As regular readers might have noticed, hybrids are no longer for fuel economy anymore.  Well, not exclusively.  There’s a growing list of manufacturers using alternative technologies to add a big performance punch, as well, notably including Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche.

And you’ll soon be able to add Jaguar to that list, if the scuttlebutt proves accurate.  Borrowing a bit of technology from the now-cancelled C-X75 supercar program, Jaguar is reportedly working up a 700-horsepower hybrid driveline for the upcoming coupe version of the new F-Type.

The new drivetrain – if it makes it beyond the planning stage – would provide a significant bump over the still-new Jaguar F-Type convertible’s 495-hp V8 S model.  And it would bump the top speed from an already impressive 186 mph to something north of 200, according to British auto mag AutoExpress, which broke the story.
