Kia Teases “Provocative” Urban Concept

Debut planned for Geneva Motor Show.

by on Jan.23, 2013

A first look at the Kia Urban Concept.

Apparently not content with just having the edgy Soul to win over young, urban buyers, Kia apparently is ready to roll out another option for them and will provide a hint of what could be in store in the form of a so far unnamed urban concept vehicle it plans to introduce at the Geneva Motor Show later this winter.

The maker is offering us a first hint of what it has in store with this teaser image, but beyond that it isn’t saying much more, other than to describe the prototype as “a provocative and racy new urban concept car.”

It adds that Kia’s now-familiar tiger-nose front end can be seen “morphing into a mischievous yet friendly grille and headlight arrangement, coupled with strong styling lines that exude speed and energy from every angle.”

Honda Urban SUV Concept Introduced

Honda’s smallest crossover will be built alongside Fit in Mexico.

Honda's Urban SUV Concept is a sleek departure for the company that previously brought us the boxy Element.

What, you were expecting an Element redux?

Two years after ending production of the intentionally ugly-duckling boxy Element, Honda showed the Urban SUV Concept, a thinly disguised look at a new small crossover that will slot in below the CR-V in the Honda lineup at the Detroit auto show. Key competitors will be the quirky Nissan Juke and the Fiat 500L, a supersize version of the diminutive Fiat 500.

Sleek and Modern!

While the trucklet’s profile is similar to many other small crossovers – including big brother CR-V – a unique, upswept character line that suggest speed.

Honda, Lincoln to Unveil Downsized Crossovers at Detroit Auto Show

Compact CUVs among the market’s fastest-growing niches.

Honda's Urban SUV Concept will reappear after a new assembly plant opens in Mexico.

Honda plans to unveil the Urban SUV Concept at next month’s Detroit Auto Show, a crossover that will be based on the Japanese maker’s subcompact Fit model. The North American International Auto Show, as it’s formally known, will be awash with downsized crossover-utility vehicles – including the long-rumored Lincoln MKC which will share some of its basic underpinnings with the small Ford Escape, albeit trimmed out for the luxury market.

Small cars, in general, are rapidly gaining ground as fuel prices nudge ever upward. According to Ford Chief Operating Officer Mark Fields, B- and C- segment models have jumped from 13% of the overall U.S. market to 20% since 2005. And the trend is expected to continue at an even faster pace.

Nowhere is that expected to be more apparent than in the compact and subcompact crossover niches. Manufacturers are rapidly adding ever-smaller crossovers such as the Buick Encore and BMW X1, both in mainstream and upscale market segments.

Honda is offering little detail other than to describe the Urban SUV as “a global concept model combining a sporty and dynamic SUV profile with a spacious, functional interior.”
