First Drive: 2017 Honda Civic Type-R

Honda aims to rule the "hot hatch" category.

by on Jun.14, 2017

The 2017 Honda Civic Type-R finally reaches U.S. showrooms after a two-decade wait.

Pity the poor American driver. Sure, they have plenty of options to choose from, but many of the most intriguing alternatives haven’t made it into U.S. showrooms. Until recently, that included some of the most exciting offerings in the hot hatch segment, like the Ford Focus RS and the Honda Civic Type-R.

We’ll have to wait a bit longer to get our hands on the Blue Oval’s entry, but we had the good fortune to spend a long weekend in Montreal, first sitting back to watch the annual Formula 1 Grand Prix and then logging some track time of our own behind the wheel of the Type-R, the first version of the Honda five-door rocket ever to reach the U.S. market.

The latest and last entry into the largest line-up of Civic alternatives ever, the Type-R is also the most powerful, delivering a blistering 306 horsepower to the front wheels. From first glance, the five-door is also the most audacious, with the sort of aero treatment you’d expect on something specifically designed for the track. But it’s all functional, and despite some concerns about Honda’s decision to stay with a front, rather than all-wheel-drive layout, it all magically comes together. And with a starting price as much as $5,000 less than key competitors, this hot hatch seems destined to become a hot ticket. (more…)

Honda Reveals New Civic Hatchback Ahead of Paris Debut

But U.S. market to get the new 5-door first.

by on Sep.16, 2016

Expect the base 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback to start at around $20,000 in the U.S.

Paris Motor showgoers will be getting the first look at the all-new Honda Civic Hatchback later this month. But American motorists will have the first chance to buy the five-door when it goes on sale in September.

The hatchback is the latest variant to roll out as Honda wraps up the most diverse line-up of Civic models in its history, and U.S. buyers, in particular, will have more alternatives to choose from than ever, including sedan, coupe, hatch and high-performance packages.

The new Civic Hatchback will be based off the same, 10th-generation platform used for the other compact models. More significantly, it will mark the first time Honda has offered a five-door version in the U.S. in over a decade, since the seventh-generation Civic was replaced.

Honda Civic Type R Concept a “Racing Car for the Road”

Production model will get new Earth Dreams Turbo engine.

by on Mar.04, 2014

The Honda Civic Type R Concept uses the maker's new Earth Dreams turbo I-4 engine.

Automakers often like to talk about how they’ve taken racing technology from the track to the street, but the Honda Civic Type R Concept debuting in Geneva this week is, as much as anything, meant to celebrate the Japanese automaker’s upcoming rebirth on the Formula One circuit.

The show car offers a hint of the “styling direction” Honda plans to take next year when it not only returns to F1 but launches the much-anticipated Civic Type R, Chief Stylist Masaru Hasegawa proclaiming, “Type R represents Honda’s racing spirit. It is built with a passion for motorsport.”

Auto Show News!

Prototypes of the Type R have been busily running the grueling Nurburgring in Germany, and the exterior styling of the show car reflects what  Honda has been learning about how to reduce drag, improve down-force and improve engine and brake cooling.
