Tough, Sure, but Work Truck Buyers also Demanding Luxury Touches

Ford adds Sync, leather seats and other amenities to 2013 F-Series Super Duty pickup.

The 2013 Ford F-Series Super Duty Platinum.

Watch any manly-man TV show and you’re certain to see the commercials featuring manly men doing tough guy stuff with their pickups, hauling trailers, building roads, blasting mountains into piles of rubble.  No wonder makers such as Ford like to talk about horsepower, towing capacity and other measures of brute power.

But, it seems, those truck powers are more like the rest of the world in also wanting plenty of creature comforts, the sort of things you might measure by the number of speakers or the wattage of the amp.

No wonder, then, that Ford says it will make its toughest work trucks decidedly more luxurious and comfortable, adding such niceties as Sync, MyFordTouch, leather and 10-way power seats to its 2013 F-Series Super Duty line-up.

Notably, the Deroit maker is adding an all-new Platinum Series model to the 2013 Super Duty range.

Study Finds Diesel, Gas Have Leg Up On Hybrids

“Dust to Dust” study looks at overall energy costs.

Ford Focus: could it be more energy-efficient than the Toyota Prius?

It’s become conventional wisdom that hybrids have a significant energy advantage over commonplace gasoline and diesel-powered automobiles.  But according to a new study, conventional wisdom is once against wrong.

In a face-off that takes into account everything from production to the eventual disposal of a vehicle – along with the fuel used while that vehicle is on the road – gasoline and diesel trump hybrids, declares the latest in an ongoing series of “Dust to Dust” studies by the West Coast research firm, CNW Marketing.

But pure battery-electric vehicles, or BEVs, may trump all other automotive technologies, according to CNW’s chief, Art Spinella.

Instant Energy

“When it comes to the total energy cost to society of individual models of vehicles, diesel and gasoline powered vehicles are less expensive from “Dust to Dust” than the current comparable hybrid offerings,” says Spinella, adding that, “In a face-off between diesel and gasoline, diesel-powered models are similarly less energy intensive.”

GMC bolts the Denali badge on a heavy-duty pickup for the first time.

Conventional wisdom has it that big trucks are an endangered species.  If so, don’t tell it to Detroit makers, who’re unleashing an assortment of macho machines designed for those with serious towing and hauling needs.

Coming a month after the Chicago Auto Show debut of the new heavy-duty Chevy Silverado, General Motors’ other truck brand weighs in at the St. Louis Auto Show with the 2011 GMC Sierra Denali HD.  It’s the first time the Denali name has been bolted onto a heavy-duty GMC pickup.
