GM Tells Unifor Equinox Going to Mexico if Strike Doesn’t End

The ongoing talks between General Motors and Unifor-represented workers at the company’s plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, may be heading south — literally.

The workers at the plant, which produces the hot-selling Chevy Equinox, walked off the line more than four weeks ago and GM is beginning to feel the pinch. GM negotiators told Unifor they had a Plan B in place if the plant’s workers didn’t return to work.

“GM just told us today that they are going to ramp up production in Mexico,” Unifor President Jerry Dias told Reuters. “They have declared war on Canada.” (more…)

GM Laying Off More Employees Due to Ingersoll Strike

GM is going to be laying off employees at its plant in Flint, Michigan, as a result of the Ingersoll strike.

As the strike at a key assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, heads into its second week, General Motors expects to lay off workers at other plants within the company’s North American manufacturing system.

“We are making production adjustments at three of our propulsion operations due to a labor dispute in Canada,” a GM spokeswoman said.

In addition to the engine plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, a plant in Flint, Michigan, and a transmission plant in St. Catharines, Ontario, are planning some short-term layoffs, she said.  (more…)

Unifor workers at GM's CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, still angry about losing 700 jobs, are ready to strike.

General Motors faces a strike deadline at a key Canadian plant that builds one of its newest and hottest-selling vehicles.

More than 3,000 members of Unifor Local 88 in Ingersoll, Ontario, are poised to go on strike at 11:59 p.m., Sept. 17. Last month, members of Local 88 overwhelming approved a strike if their negotiators could not reach an agreement with GM.

Workers at the CAMI plant in Ingersoll, which GM once operated as a joint venture with Suzuki, are covered by an agreement that is separate from the agreement that Unifor signed with GM in September 2016. (more…)
