GM Relocates International Headquarters to Singapore

Shift from Shanghai allows maker to focus efforts in China.

GM is moving its international headquarters from Shanghai, China, to Singapore.

General Motors is moving its international headquarters from Shanghai, China, to Singapore. Stefan Jacoby, an executive vice president, will oversee about 120 employees in the new location, GM said in a statement.

The move, which expected to be complete in the second quarter of 2014, is part of the maker’s recently announced plans separate China operations from its international unit.

By splitting China from that group, the company can focus on the Chinese marketplace, which is the largest in the world. GM sold 2.84 million autos in China last year, making the country its biggest single market, and expects to deliver 3 million vehicles this year. (more…)

GM Looks to Buoy Opel with Russian Expansion

Maker views country as next big market for new car buyers.

GM is positioning Opel to be its top brand in Russia. The spot is currently held by Chevrolet.

General Motors is shifting its strategy in one of the world’s top emerging markets, Russia, to create some new pace for its Opel, the cornerstone of its ailing European operations.

Russia is viewed by many automakers as key market in the future, including GM, Ford, Daimler and Volkswagen as well as Hyundai and Toyota. Additionally, Russia’s largest automaker, AutoVaz and its strategic partner, are also looking to expand. Bo Andersson, a former GM executive, was recently promoted to become AutoVaz’s first non-Russian chief executive.

For the past decade, GM has made Russia, a target market for its aggressive global expansion of the Chevrolet brand. Chevrolet, according to GM, has now delivered 12 straight quarters of record growth as GM has pushed ahead with its plans for Chevrolet. (more…)

GM’s Exec Revolving Door Continues to Spin

Southeast Asian chief is latest to be broomed.

Another experienced executive has elected to quit a senior post with General Motors’ vital overseas operations in a sensitive and fast growing emerging market where GM has been pressing to gain market share.

Martin Apfel, president of GM South East Asia Operations, GM Thailand and Chevrolet Sales Thailand, has elected to leave General Motors, effective July 31, to “pursue other interests”. A permanent replacement will be announced at a later date.

Apfel is the latest in a growing line of senior GM executives, a large share of them working abroad, who have tendered resignations in recent months – or been shown the door.  It’s unclear why so many are exiting at this point, even as GM’s overseas sales gain momentum, but CEO Dan Akerson has made a point of saying that the company will hold its managers more accountable for their work than in decades past.

The “Heartbeat of America” is rapidly expanding its presence outside the U.S., two-thirds of Chevrolet sales expected to come from markets outside the U.S. this year.

With Chevy the only one of the five major global brands to increase its worldwide market share this year, it would not be a surprise, said a senior General Motors executive, if the bowtie marque were to eventually ring up four out of five of its sales in foreign markets.

“That’s absolutely possible…though not a target,” said Mark Reuss, GM’s president of North American operations, following a dinner celebrating Chevrolet’s 100th anniversary.

The brand was founded on November 3, 1911 by race car driver Louis Chevrolet and entrepreneur William C. Durant – who was at the time exiled from General Motors, a company he had also created less than a decade earlier.
