Barra Commits to 1M EVs on Global Roads by 2026

Cheaper batteries, demand from China pushing numbers.

GM CEO Mary Barra said the automaker will have 1 million EVs on roads around the world by 2026.

General Motors is following in the footsteps of former President Barak Obama by promising to build 1 million electric vehicles.

Obama’s vision wasn’t fulfilled, despite the $7,500 tax credit designed to make the cars more affordable and lure EV buyers to showrooms, but GM CEO Mary Barra told analysts at the Barclays 2017 Global Automotive Conference in New York, that GM will hit the target by 2026 on a global basis.

GM Will Meet China EV Mandate Without NEV Credits in 2019

New E100 helping to pave way for other GM EVs coming in 2018.

GM is counting on this Baojun E100 electric vehicle to help it meet China's EV production mandates by 2019.

Automakers around the globe are scurrying to try to meet China’s tougher-than-comfortable standards for NEVs, or New Energy Vehicles; however, General Motors isn’t sweating the deadline as it will make the time frame, the company says.

Matt Tsien, GM China’s president, said the company will make the 2019 production goals without having to buy NEV credits from other makers. The difficult 2019 quotas have many automakers hustling to make deals with China-based automakers to increase production of EVs.

GM Appoints Bolt Boss to New EV Post

Fletcher named Vice President, Global Electric Vehicle Programs

With the pressure mounting in several corners of the globe to promote the use of electric vehicles on the road, General Motors Co. appointed Pamela Fletcher to the newly created position of Vice President, Global Electric Vehicle Programs.

Fletcher, who has spent a substantial part of her career with GM working on electric vehicles, led the team that launched the Chevrolet Bolt EV and “created the plan to accelerate us along the pathway to our vision of a zero emissions world,” the company noted.

GM Moves Spark Battery Production In-House

New pack built on same line as Volt.

LaTanya Clanton works on the Spark EV battery line. GM is bringing all of its electric vehicle battery building capabilities in-house at Brownstown.

General Motors is bringing the production of its new battery pack for the 2015 Chevrolet Spark EV in-house to its Brownstown Township, Michigan, plant. The plant also builds the packs for the Chevy Volt, Opel Ampera and Cadillac ELR.

“Using our in-house engineering and manufacturing expertise enabled us to deliver a battery system that is more efficient and lighter than the 2014 Spark EV without sacrificing range,” said Larry Nitz, executive director of GM global transmission and electrification engineering, in a statement.
