Nissan’s Ghosn to Reveal Plans for Updated Leaf, Autonomous Cars

Also expect to hear about additional battery-cars during CES keynote.

Carlos Ghosn is expected to reveal big news during this week's Consumer Electronics Show.

Carlos Ghosn, the CEO of both Nissan and its French alliance partner Renault, is expected to make some big news about battery-electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles during a keynote speech at this week CES conference in Las Vegas.

Among other things, Ghosn will likely reveal plans for the next-generation Nissan Leaf, the new model expected to deliver as much as twice the mileage of the original battery-electric vehicles. Ghosn may also announce timing for the production of the Japanese maker’s first self-driving vehicle.

Nissan officials declined to comment on what Ghosn has in store, though they did point out that the company was the first manufacturer to launch mainstream production of a battery-electric vehicle. And it has been an early proponent of autonomous vehicle technology. (more…)

Detroit Auto Show Ready to Go Mobile with AutoMobili-D

Showcase emphasizes importance of technology in auto industry.

The AutoMobili-D exposition, show in this artist's rendering, is expected to open 50 start-up companies as part of its 120 exhibitors overall.

For years now automakers have been emphasizing the amount of technology used in today’s new cars, trucks and utility vehicles. In fact, so much so that some auto shows are hosting entirely separate “show within a show” style events to showcase that technology.

At the North American International Auto Show, it’s called AutoMobili-D and in its inaugural event, it will feature nearly 50 start-ups from around the world featuring innovative mobility platforms in January at Cobo Center.

Those start-ups are part of a group of 120 companies overall inhabiting a 120,000 square-foot section of Cobo Center highlighting the latest in autonomous vehicle technology as well as other gee-whiz-advancements for vehicles. (more…)
