Ford Goes Off-Road With New Expedition FX4

A ute for all occasions.

by on Jun.19, 2017

Buyers have already been taking the Expedition off road; Ford adds features to make that easier.

If you’ve thought about the big Ford Expedition as nothing more than a minivan alternative, you might need to think again with the debut of the new FX4 edition.

All versions of the 2018 Ford Expedition migrate to an aluminum-intensive body, sharing the same engineering approach as the full-size F-150 pickup. The people-mover also gets a new powertrain package and updated safety and infotainment technologies.

Product News!

But Ford is taking another tip from the F-150 line-up, where the FX4 package is a perennial buyer favorite. The off-road trim level will now be offered for Expedition buyers, as well.

Lincoln Wants Back In With Remake of Big Navigator

A long-awaited remake puts Lincoln's big SUV back in the game.

by on Apr.12, 2017

With the 2018 Lincoln Navigator, the big ute gets its first full makeover in a decade.

The company that invented the full-size luxury SUV has been little more than an also-ran in recent years, Ford Motor Co. long neglecting its big Lincoln Navigator – until now, anyway.

This week’s New York International Auto Show will see the debut of a flood of new sport- and crossover-utility vehicles, but perhaps none has been awaited with more interest than the 2018 Navigator which is finally getting the complete makeover it has long and desperately needed.

Lincoln Hopes to Get Back on Track with Navigator Makeover

Production model a year away.

by on Mar.23, 2016

The Lincoln Navigator Concept makes its splashy debut at the 2016 NY Auto Show.

When it first rolled into showrooms in 1997, luxury car buyers had never seen anything like it. That first Lincoln Navigator was big and brash and decidedly American. It was an instant hit — in the process spawning an assortment of imitations. And somehow, the full-size luxury SUV ran off track.

All but set to abandon the nameplate entirely, Ford Motor Co.’s luxury division launched a less than compelling update two years ago – and more than a decade after the last full Navigator makeover. But Lincoln may finally be ready to get it right, at least if the concept version of the luxury SUV debuting at this week’s New York International Auto Show is any indication.

The Lincoln Navigator Concept is even more over-the-top than the original luxury ute, with twin gull-wing doors and three-step fold-out running boards. But while a number of the show car’s features won’t get beyond the show car stage, Lincoln officials acknowledge, the Navigator Concept suggests there’ll be a lot to like about the production version coming sometime next year.

Honda Makes “Dramatic Shift” With Redesigned 2016 Pilot

New ute’s design moves “outside the box.”

by on Feb.12, 2015

New for 2016, the Honda Pilot gets a dramatic exterior restyling with its customary boxy shape replaced with sculpted curves.

With the plunge in gas prices, few automakers seem better positioned than Honda with its array of utility vehicles, and one of those is getting a major update just in time for the Chicago Auto Show.

The first eight-passenger SUV in a mainstream segment has also been one of the market’s hottest utility vehicles, with sales of 1.4 million since it launched in 2002. But where the first two generations stuck with a traditionally boxy design, the new Pilot is making what Honda officials are describing as a “dramatic shift” in styling while also moving a bit more upscale.

Stay Informed!

“I guess you could say we were thinking outside the box,” joked chief engineer Marc Ernst, as he pulled the wraps off the new model. (more…)

Audi Bringing All-New Q7 to Detroit Auto Show

German maker’s oldest model finally getting a remake.

by on Dec.12, 2014

The new Audi Q7 will shed more than 700 pounds.

Among the estimated 45 world debuts scheduled for the upcoming Detroit Auto Show, expect a big one from Audi – quite literally, as it plans to reveal the replacement for the biggest, and oldest, model in its line-up.

The Q7 SUV has undergone only the most modest of tweaks since its original debut back in 2006, an unusually lengthy wait considering the ever-faster pace of today’s auto industry.

The Last Word!

Audi apparently intends to address some of the key complaints about the Q7, which include its unimpressive fuel economy, as well as its poor space utilization. Among other things, the big ute will drop more than 700 pounds of mass. It will, meanwhile, get a new plug-in hybrid system which Audi claims will deliver as much as 138 mpg.

Lincoln Sticks with Old Name for (Almost) New Truck

Major update in the works – but not for now.

by on Sep.22, 2014

The most visually obvious change to the 2015 Navigator is the use of the new Lincoln grille.

Already confirming plans for four new vehicles by 2016, Ford Motor Co. has a number of additional new products in the pipeline for the years that follow, including a sporty coupe that will share the same platform as its new-for-2015 Ford Mustang.

There’s also a new version of its long-in-the-tooth Lincoln Navigator in the works – though, for now, buyers who want the full-size luxury SUV will have to settle for a largely warmed-over version of the big truck.

Stay on the Fast Track!

At least they won’t have to try to figure out a new nomenclature. While everything else in the Lincoln line-up has adopted a name starting with MK, the Navigator will remain the Navigator going forward.

GM Gets a Big Lift from its Big SUVs

Sales running well ahead of expectation for new Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban and GMC Yukon models.

by on May.07, 2014

GM introduced its full-size SUV lineup for 2015 in a bi-coastal event led by President Dan Ammann.

General Motors needed some good news and it’s getting some from one of its traditional strongholds.

Sales of the maker’s recently redesigned full-size sport-utility vehicles, the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and the GMC Yukon, Yukon Denali, Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali, are exceeding expectations, according to Rick Scheidt, GM vice president of truck strategy.

Keep on Truckin!

Scheidt said GM’s sales of the big utility vehicles alone bring in enough revenue to make them a Fortune 400 company.

Meanwhile, GMC’s total sales in April were the brand’s best for the month in seven years, with 17% retail and 13% overall year-over-year increases, noted Roger McCormick, director of marketing for GMC and Buick.

Cadillac Pushes Big Price Hike for All-New Escalade

2015 ‘Slade will start at nearly $73,000.

by on Jan.23, 2014

The 2015 Cadillac Escalade will start with a price just under $73,000, which is $8,000 more than the previous base model.

With an all-new model on the way, Cadillac plans to take a big price hike when it launches the 2015 Escalade later this year.

The next-generation full-size luxury SUV will start at $72,690, including a $995 destination charge, or nearly $8,000 more than the old model. That could change the competitive game in a landscape now full of luxury utes.

Product News!

The 2015 Cadillac Escalade, which made its formal debut at a splashy media event in New York last October, is based on a new platform and offers an array of new comfort, safety and performance features – for which manufacturers traditionally attempt to cover costs by boosting prices. But the maker insists the increase isn’t as significant as it seems, as Cadillac is actually eliminating its “base,” $64,740 ‘Slade model for 2015. (more…)

Lincoln Breathes New Life into Aging Navigator

Full-size luxury ute gets first significant update in half a decade.

by on Jan.23, 2014

The update to the 2015 Lincoln Navigator marks the biggest makeover since 2009 to the full-size ute.

This story has been updated to note the price increase of the Lincoln Navigator’s most direct competitor, the Cadillac Escalade

It helped launch an entirely new market segment and introduced the concept of “bling” to the auto industry, but in recent years, the once-prized Lincoln Navigator has become little more than an after-thought in the luxury car market.

Now, as it sets out to rebuild its struggling Lincoln brand, parent Ford Motor Co. aims to breathe new life into the big Navigator with the most significant update to the full-size luxury sport-utility vehicle in five years.  But a sneak peek at the 2015 Navigator raises questions about whether the planned changes go far enough at a time when the big Lincoln’s most direct competitor, the Cadillac Escalade, is getting a far more extensive makeover.

Your Inside Source!

The Navigator originally debuted 17 years ago and “helped define the full-size luxury segment,” proclaimed Andrew Frick, Lincoln’s marketing manager, during a media background session on the 2015 SUV – which will be formally unveiled at the Chicago Motor Show next month. The update, he added, “will bolster” a product that had lost a significant amount of ground in recent years as it grew old and faced more competition from players as diverse as Caddy’s Escalade, the Infiniti QX80, the Mercedes-Benz GL and Lexus LX570.

Cadillac Readies Overdue Escalade Replacement

GM plans “most sophisticated” SUV it has ever built.

by on Jun.14, 2013

Cadillac is finally getting ready to launch a replacement for the aged Escalade SUV.

The next generation Cadillac Escalade, which is due out next spring, will be the most sophisticated sport utility vehicle every built by General Motors, GM executives told analysts this week during a meeting at the company’s Milford Proving Grounds.

Robert Ferguson, GM vice president of Global Cadillac, offered analysts a glimpse at the 2015 Escalade and emphasized it is expected to play a major role in the growth of Cadillac, which is enjoying its best year since 1976.

“The Escalade is still a very bold vehicle,” Ferguson said. “But the next generation is going to become more sophisticated.”

Ferguson said the new Escalade will meet or exceed the expectations of high-line buyers with a luxury interior that will match or exceed those found in luxury passenger cars.
