Mustang: World’s Best-Selling Sports Car for Third Year in a Row

Exports to Asia and Europe pushing pony car to the top.

by on Apr.17, 2018

The Ford Mustang is the world's best-selling sports car three years running.

When the Ford Mustang turned 50, the automaker decided it was time to see just how popular the pony car was, and it began selling one of America’s first muscle cars globally.

Turned out to be a fine idea.

Industry News!

Now that the Mustang is about to turn the big Five-Four, it is also celebrating its third consecutive year as the best-selling sports car in the world, according to IHS Markit. Global Mustang registrations in 2017 totaled 125,809 cars, according to Ford. (more…)

A Chinese print ad announces the official arrival of the 2015 Mustang to Ford showrooms there.

Barely two months after loading the first of the new 2015 Mustangs onto a ship for the journey to Asia, Ford Motor Co. claims the pony car is in full gallop overseas.

Though Ford has always had a few small foreign markets for Mustang, with grey market imports available in others, this year, with the launch of the 50th anniversary model, marks the first time Mustang has officially gone global.

Pony Up!

And initial indications are positive. Even as U.S. sales climbed 32% last month compared to February 2014, Ford claims folks have visited the Mustang page on its European website, while nearly 1.1 million put together their dream version on the site’s vehicle configurator. In China, meanwhile, more than 18,000 potential buyers have already signed up for a test drive.

Asian brands introduce new vehicles to defend turf.

Ford is enjoying a more than 130% increase in Ford Mustang sales in California in January.

Ford and General Motors want and need to grow sales in California: territory long dominated by their Japanese rivals. Recent sales of each maker’s more popular models suggest they may have found the secret to success in the Golden State.

Erich Merkle, Ford’s North American sales analyst, noted that sales of the Mustang nationally more than doubled last month to 8,694 vehicles: a 124% increase that marks Mustang’s best January sales since 2007.

By the Numbers!

While the national results were impressive, Mustang sales grew by 131% in California and by 146% in the Southern California region around Los Angeles where many trends in automotive fashion begin and take root. More often than not, the seeds planted don’t involve domestic automakers. (more…)

Mustang Ponies Up – Regains Lead Over Camaro

But will it continue to hold the reins?

by on Dec.03, 2014

Ford's 2015 Mustang is smoking the competition.

The all-new Ford Mustang is back in full gallop, and has corralled its long-time rival, the Chevrolet Camaro.

Ford says it sold more than 8,000 of the pony cars last month – a more than 60% year-over-year jump, marking the best November Mustang has had since 2006. Equally significant, as it closes out its 50th anniversary, Mustang has regained its position as the best-seller in the U.S. muscle car market.

“We’re feeling good about the response the public has been showing us about the car,” said Raj Nair, Ford’s global product development director, in a conversation with
