Ford Uncovers New Mustang Tech

Faster convertible top, improved aerodynamics, bigger trunk among the benefits.

The 2015 Ford Mustang Convertible.

Ford has plenty to celebrate as its popular pony car gets set to celebrate its 50th anniversary in just a couple more months.  But based on a tech backgrounder, buyers will also have reason to applaud when the 2015 Mustang comes to market.

Along with the updated styling, the next-generation muscle car will offer improved aerodynamics, better fuel economy, a stiffer body and platform, a roomier trunk and, Ford revealed, a significantly faster and easier-to-operate convertible top.

The Last Word!

Ford isn’t providing precise figures yet on the ragtop but hints it will take about half the time to open or close as before.  It certainly helps to simplify the task of unlocking the top, switching from two latches above either side of the windshield to one center-mounted – though Ford surprisingly still didn’t opt for the latch-less automatic top offered by so many other manufacturers.

First Look: 2015 Ford Mustang

“A contemporary interpretation” designed for a global market.

Ford takes the plunge with an all-new, 50th anniversary remake of the Mustang.

At 50, most folks are clearly showing signs of middle age, but when it came to developing an all-new Mustang, Ford Motor Co. designers and engineers knew they had to target a youthful audience with a spry and sporty “pony” car that would not only remain an icon in the U.S. but take the rest of the world by storm.

Whether they succeeded will depend upon how potential buyers react to the all-new, sixth-generation Ford unveiled today.  Developed under the maker’s One Ford strategy, it’s the first Mustang specifically designed to be sold around the world, overseas markets expected to generate at least 10% of the iconic muscle car’s future sales volume.

The basic look of the 2015 Ford Mustang will be familiar to fans, especially nose-on, where the coupe maintains the distinctively muscular appearance that dates back to the original pony car unveiled by then-Ford President Lee Iacocca on April 13, 1964 at the Ford Pavilion at the New York World’s Fair.

Covered. The first images of the 2015 Ford Mustang leak out days before its official preview.

There are few secrets in the auto industry these days. And it doesn’t help if someone is planning to run a story on one of the most important debuts of the coming year on their front page.

These images of the 2015 Ford Mustang come to us through a series of connections but all trace back to the December 9th issue of Autoweek magazine.  What you see is the sixth-generation pony car set to make its official debut through an unusual, 6-city/1-day preview scheduled for this coming Thursday.

The Last Word!

There are plenty of reasons why interest in the new Mustang is running so high.  We don’t get a new version of the muscle car all that often, this being only the sixth all-new model since the car made its splashy debut at the 1964 New York World’s Fair nearly 50 years ago. But the story gets more interesting.  While the Mustang has long been classically American, Ford has every intention of taking it global this time around.
