Ford is looking to repeat that winning formula at the 24 Hour of Le Mans with the new 2016 GT.

Ford surprised most everyone on a cold January day when in addition to showing off its latest model introductions, it rolled out a new Ford GT.

Aside from telling attendees it was powered by an EcoBoost engine, it was light as a feather and they were pretty certain they would sell it, one question remained: will they race it.

Ford Begins Taking Orders for $400,000 GT Supercar

Initial run limited to just 500 - and buyers will have to jump through lots of hoops.

Potential Ford GT buyers will have to go through an extensive application process.

Looking to buy one of the year’s most eagerly awaited new models? Ford opened up the order bank for its new GT supercar today, and it expects to have a long line of potential owners signing up.

That said, don’t expect the sort of frantic rush that followed the debut of the new Tesla Model 3 two weeks ago. Ford has plans to produce far fewer GTs – at more than 10 times the price. And Ford plans to put up some hurdles that will limit who is likely to actually get one of the new supercars.

So, you’ve saved your pennies and have a big enough bank account to write a check for a new Ford GT when it goes on sale this year. But you still may be out of luck. Ford has set up a rigorous, online application process to find deserving homes for the new supercar.

An assortment of affluent aficionados have already let Ford know they’d like one of the limited-edition GTs – which are expected to cost somewhere north of $400,000. Lifting a page from the Ferrari playbook, Ford has decided that simply having the cash won’t be enough to get a GT.

Ford Chairman Bill Ford and CEO Mark Fields unveiling the new Ford GT supercar at the Detroit Auto Show.

Ford Motor Co. is only promising some “significant performance news” will be announced in Cologne, Germany today. But based on a variety of hints the maker has been dropping, the betting is that it will announce plans to return to Le Mans in the near future, all but certainly to race the reborn Ford GT.

Rumors of a new Le Mans program began to surface even before Ford revealed the latest take on the ultracar at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit last January. Company officials then suggested they might have additional plans for the GT.

Performance News!

The announcement will come just a day before the 2015 Le Mans race gets the green flag. If Ford were to put the GT back on the track in 2016 it would be more than just a coincidence. That would mark the 50th anniversary of the maker’s stunning victory at Le Mans with its original GT40 Mk II
