Ford CEO Predicts Profits for Europe

Fields disagrees with Wall Street analysts about maker's strengths.

Ford CEO Mark Fields told the Automotive News World Congress that the company's European operations will be profitable this year.

After five consecutive years of losses, Ford Motor Co. expects to turn a profit in Europe, Ford chief executive officer Mark Fields said.

“We are going to be profitable in Europe in 2016,” he said. “We are not pulling out of Russia. We think when the economy comes back, Russia will be a good market for us.”

Fields told the Automotive News World Congress that Ford was making steady progress towards key goals of steady growth and profitability despite losing marketshare in North America. “The economic conditions in the U.S. are going to be very favorable (in 2016),” the Ford CEO said. “Interest rates are low, Energy costs are low.” (more…)

New Ford System Could Spell End to Speeding Tickets

System reads signs, automatically adjusts vehicle speed.

Ford's new system could become a basic part of tomorrow's autonomous vehicles.

“But officer…” If you’ve ever tried to explain your way out of a speeding ticket, claiming you didn’t know how fast you were going, or what the local limit was, you might want to check out the new Intelligent Speed Limiter that Ford is launching this year.

A number of vehicles now display the local speed limit on their navigation screens, some using cameras to ensure that the limit hasn’t changed since the navi database was created. The system being introduced in the next-generation Ford S-Max people-mover goes the next step, and actually controls the speed of the vehicle itself.

“Drivers are not always conscious of speeding and sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement,” notes Stefan Kappes, active safety supervisor, Ford of Europe. “Intelligent Speed Limiter can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit.” (more…)

Farley, Odell Swap Jobs in Ford Management Shake-Up

Changes “planned for some time,” says maker.

Ford's global marketing czar Jim Farley will be heading across the Atlantic to run Europe, Africa and Middle Eastern operations.

Two of Ford Motor Co.’s top executives will be swapping jobs as part of a broader management shift.

Stephen Odell has been named the new executive vice president of Global Marketing, Sales and Service operations, taking over from current marketing chief Jim Farley. Farley, in turn, takes over Odell’s old job as EVP and President of Europe, Middle East and Africa.
