Ford Promises to Fix “Isolated” Quality Problems

Maker remains committed to MyFordTouch despite problems.

by on Dec.19, 2012

Ford Chief Operating Officer Mark Fields insists recent quality problems are "isolated incidents."

Ford has long claimed that “Quality is Job 1,” though it has taken a drubbing in recent months for some nagging problems that have seen it tumble on quality and reliability surveys.

The maker intends to aggressively address such “isolated incidents,” Ford’s new Chief Operating Officer Mark Fields insists.  That notably includes the maker’s Sync and MyFordTouch infotainment technologies which have come in for some of the sharpest criticism. But Ford will also have to deal with a variety of other problems that have seen some of its newest models repeatedly recalled in recent months, including a variety of recalls.

Come Along for the Ride!

“We’ve had a few issues,” acknowledges Fields, who until a few weeks ago served as Ford’s President of the Americas. “When we see a problem we go at it proactively to address the issue as quickly as possible.”

Ford Finds Software Fix for Fusion, Escape Fire Problem

Addresses “unique overheating condition” to prevent coolant loss.

by on Dec.10, 2012

Ford's new 2013 Fusion faced two recalls this month.

Ten days after announcing the recall of nearly 90,000 Escape crossovers and Fusion sedans, Ford has come up with a fix to prevent potential engine fires in those vehicles equipped with the maker’s popular 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine.

Ford acknowledged it did not have a solution in hand when the recall was announced earlier this month but it stressed the urgency of a problem that had been linked to more than half a dozen vehicle fires after their engines overheated and spilled coolant onto hot engine or exhaust components.

The fix comes in the form of a software update that will better manage engine operations during what Ford described as “a unique overheating condition that could occur under unique operating conditions.” While the fix appears to be simple to implement, Ford has advised owners not to drive their vehicles until dealers can make the necessary repair.

Ford Recalling New Fusion for Faulty Headlamps

Second recall in a week for new sedan.

by on Dec.07, 2012

The 2013 Ford Fusion faces a second recall.

Ford Motor Co. plans to recall more than 19,000 of its new Fusion midsize sedans to replace faulty headlamps, the second service action hitting the new and well-publicized vehicle in just a week.

Last Friday, the automaker announced that it would recall about 80,000 vehicles, including nearly 16,000 Fusions, because of a potential fire risk.

The latest recall was triggered by the discovery of a manufacturing defect at a Ford supplier that could result in the vehicle’s headlamps dimming and becoming hazy over time, according to documents the automaker filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety  Administration.

A company spokesman said the headlamp problem was discovered during internal testing of the Fusion sedan, which was completely redesigned for the 2013 model-year and which went on sale in September. The maker says it has received no reports of accidents or injuries related to the problem – though NHTSA warned that the defect could nonetheless increase the possibility of a crash.

Engine Fire Problem Could Snag Ford in Europe.

Seven more fires reported in European Ford models with 1.6-liter EcoBoost.

by on Dec.05, 2012

Problems with the 1.6-liter EcoBoost could snag some European models, such as the new Ford Kuga.

Ford is facing further problems with its 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine, the powertrain behind its latest recall. Nearly 90,000 Ford Escape and Fusion models sold in the U.S. were recalled late last week because of potential engine fire problems. But the problem could exist in other markets, as well.

The turbocharged engine is used in a wide range of products in Europe, small powertrains popular in a market where fuel prices can run as high as $9 a gallon. It is unclear if the problem in Europe is the same as what forced the U.S. recall – or one of several other recalls that have involved the new Escape, which was introduced earlier this year.

According to Ford, it has received reports of seven fires in European vehicles using the 1.6-liter EcoBoost powertrain.  That has led the maker to launch an investigation into potential powertrain problems outside the U.S., a company spokesman noted.

Ford Recalls Escape – Again – and New Fusion

New models face risk of engine fire.

by on Dec.03, 2012

The new 2013 Ford Escape faces yet another recall.

Ford Motor Co.’s new Escape crossover has been the subject of a series of recalls since its mid-year debut – and now faces another as the automaker warns versions of the popular CUV equipped with a 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine could overheat and catch fire.

The problem also impacts the 2013 Ford Fusion.  In all, about 89,000 of the two models – among Ford’s best-selling nameplates – are affected.

Safety Investigators Probing Over 2 mil Honda, Ford Vehicles

NHTSA looking at ignition, engine problems.

by on Oct.05, 2012

NHTSA will consider a request to open a formal investigation targeting more than 1.5 million older Ford Escape SUVs.

Federal safety investigators are taking a closer look at reported safety problems that could eventually involve more than 2 million Ford and Honda vehicles – though it is far from certain the moves will result in eventual safety-related recalls.

A formal probe is now underway by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration targeting Honda Odyssey minivans and Pilot SUVs because of concerns about defective ignition locks that could permit vehicles to roll away.

Voice of the Automotive World!

NHTSA is, meanwhile, reviewing a request to open a formal investigation into reports that the last-generation Ford Escape suffers from a defect that could cause engine stalls or surges.

The issues could prove problematic for the two makers if they eventually lead to recalls.

Ford Announces 3rd Recall of New Escape

Faulty part installation could cause fire.

by on Sep.05, 2012

Two of the three Escape recalls have involved a risk of fire, according to Ford.

Ford’s all-new 2013 Escape crossover-utility vehicle has been targeted for its third recall since July, the latest action aimed at correcting a faulty part installation that could lead to a vehicle fire.

It is, in fact, the second recall of the new Ford Escape to deal with a fire hazard, following a previous action in July.  Despite the series of setbacks for what is one of the most new Ford products this year, Escape sales hit their highest level ever last month.

The latest service action involves 7,600 of the 2013 Ford Escape models equipped with a 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine.  Of those, 6,150 have been sold in the U.S., the rest in Canada.

Recalls Rising Fast; Over 400,000 Vehicles Added to 2012 Tally

Latest Targets: Mazda, Hyundai.

by on Jul.30, 2012

Hyundai's 2012-2013 Sonata is just one of the latest models facing a recall.

Taking its lead from Ford Motor Co., Mazda plans to recall more than 200,000 of its Tribute SUVs due to potentially sticky throttle cables that could cause the vehicles to race out of control.  Ford last week recalled the virtually identical Escape to deal with the same problem.

Meanwhile, Hyundai will recall another 200,000 Santa Fe and Sonata models to correct problems with their airbags that could make it difficult to react properly if a small adult is seated up front. The Korean carmaker also is recalling about 20,000 other vehicles due to a separate airbag problem.

While year-over-year comparisons are not yet available, industry observers are noting a sharp run-up in recalls this year – even as various studies suggest the industry is producing its highest-quality vehicles ever.  But manufacturers have come under increasing pressure from regulators and consumer watchdogs to act fast when they discover potential safety problems that might have once been ignored or dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

Ford Recalls 500,000 Escapes for Sticky Throttles

New problem created by old fix.

by on Jul.27, 2012

Ford has decided not to wait for the results of a NHTSA investigation into the 2001-2004 Escape.

Facing an investigation by NHTSA into work done under a previous callback Ford Motor Co. is now recalling nearly 500,000 of its older Escape SUVs because of a problem that could cause cruise-control cables to snag and lead the vehicle to begin racing out of control.

The recall applies only to V-6-powered versions of the popular Ford compact sport-utility vehicles built between the 2001 and 2004 model-years.  But it could add to the embarrassment for the maker which already has had to issue a pair of recalls for the brand new version of the Escape.

We Brake for News!

The recall of the older models of the SUV follows word that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration would begin an investigation covering both the Escape and the virtually identical Mazda Tribute.  In all, the probe targets 730,000 of the vehicles.  It appears that not all the Escape models included in the NHTSA action are being recalled, however. The latest recall covers just 485,000 of the Ford utes.

Ford, Volvo Announce New Recalls

“Carpet entrapment,” transmission problems spur action.

by on Jul.16, 2012

The first 10,000 of the new 2013 Ford Escape crossovers will be recalled.

Are automakers ordering more recalls this year? While it will likely be the end of 2012 before that question can be answered it certainly seems like more than a few days don’t go by without another headline about some safety problem or another leading to a new callback – or two, as is the case today.

The latest recalls come from Ford Motor Co., which is pulling the carpet out from underneath its new Escape crossover, so to speak, and from Volvo, whose S80 sedan appears to be slipping gears.

The Ford recall is likely to make the most headlines as it impacts the all-new 2013 Escape, a hot-selling version of the makers long-running ute that this year migrated from a classic truck-like frame platform to an all-new, car-based crossover design.
