Ford will make Alexa available to Sync users in-car, while also letting them control vehicle features from home using Amazon's Echo.

Ford is about to take Amazon’s Alexa for a ride.

She’s the wildly popular voice assistant now showing up in millions of homes equipped with various versions of Amazon’s Echo hardware. But, starting this month, owners of Ford vehicles equipped with the Sync infotainment system will be able to access some of the connected-car features in their vehicles remotely using one of Echo devices.

And, over the summer, motorists will be able to access Alexa herself from inside the vehicle to ask about things like traffic, the weather and restaurant tips, or to control some of their home automation technologies. Among other things, that means they could turn the lights on, start the coffeemaker and open the garage from behind the wheel using voice commands.

But before you sign off, she also reminds you that there’s no beer in the refrigerator.

Ford CEO Mark Fields holds a downsized Velodyne LIDAR "puck" that will be used on Fusion autonomous vehicle prototypes.

Ford Motor Co. outlined a far-reaching step into the future during a keynote speech by CEO Mark Fields marking the opening of the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The maker is putting “one foot into the future,” said Fields, as it expands from traditional automotive manufacturing into new areas of “mobility,” such as ride and car-sharing. Among a variety of projects announced by Fields, Ford will partner with Amazon to incorporate the cloud-based voice assistant, Alexa into its vehicles. That would allow a driver to not just open a garage door but turn on lights and adjust the thermostat by voice command.

Tech Talk!

The Tuesday morning event notably included no mention of a widely anticipated tie-up between Ford and Google, even though the automaker announced a major expansion in its own autonomous vehicle program. But CEO Fields left the door open to a later announcement, stressing that Ford is talking with “a variety of other potential partners.”

Ford finished second only to Amazon on YouGov's annual BrandIndex Buzz report for 2013.

They like Ford…they really like Ford!

Sally Field’s oft-quoted line from her past Oscar acceptance speech may seem appropriate for Ford’s second-place finish behind retail behemoth Amazon in YouGov’s annual BrandIndex Buzz report.

But, it’s the actual quote – “You like me, right now, you like me!” – that may be more appropriate. You see, last July when the group released it’s mid-year list of the index Ford was first while Amazon was second. Clearly, just how much favor a company holds with the public changes quickly. (more…)
