FCA’s Marchionne Races to Answer Product Questions

Grand Cherokee, Stelvio may share a platform.

Sergio Marchionne said a determination is underway to determine if the Stelvio and the Jeep Grand Cherokee will share a platform.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. is spinning so many product plates these days that CEO Sergio Marchionne’s announcement that FCA will have new products to show at next year’s North American International Auto Show was almost as much of an attempt to convince folks as to make a joke.

Marchionne also said he want FCA to continue working with Waymo, Google’s automotive unit in the future. But he also expects to retire in 2019, following the completion of the five-year plan the company laid out back in 2013.

FCA is also in the midst of a study that will determine whether or not the platform developed for Alfa Romeo’s new sport utility, the Stelvio, which was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, will serve as the same for the Jeep Grand Cherokee as well. (more…)

FCA Touts 2,000 New US Jobs

Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne's reorganization plan will add 2,000 new U.S. jobs the maker announced.

As part of Fiat Chrysler’s ongoing manufacturing reorganization in North America the company explained it will add 2,000 new jobs to the its ranks by 2020, the automaker announced yesterday, perhaps hoping to avoid being the next Twitter target of President-elect Donald Trump.

The automaker has been shifting its production in Michigan and Ohio to focus on trucks and SUVs, and is in the midst of a $1 billion plan to make that happen. The moves also include some movement of jobs from Mexico to Michigan, FCA officials noted.

After Trump began calling out automakers on Twitter in recent weeks, many have been attempting to put their best foot forward, emphasizing manufacturing plans that have been shifting small car production to Mexico also net more jobs for the U.S. plants building the more profitable and popular trucks and utility vehicles. FCA Showing New Version of Ram Rebel at NAIAS

Fiat Chrysler plans to show off its new Ram Rebel Black model at the Detroit Auto Show.

Detroit’s long-standing affinity for the pickup truck will be on display at the North American International Auto Show next week as Ram, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V.’s light truck brand, is planning to roll out a new version of the Ram 1500 Rebel.

Mike Manley, head of Jeep Brand and Ram Brand, FCA – Global, said Ram will introduce a special edition of the Rebel—the Rebel Black.

“The Ram Rebel is unique in the full-size truck segment with 33-inch off-road tires, air suspension and custom interior details,” Manley noted. “Adding the Rebel Black package to an already aggressive off-road truck will continue feeding the momentum Rebel is creating for the Ram Truck brand.” (more…)
