Land Rover Confirms Plans to Produce Range Rover Evoque Convertible

Set to go on sale in 2016.

by on Mar.02, 2015

Land Rover has been testing its new Range Rover Evoque Convertible in the tunnels of London's massive unfinished subway project.

Apparently, the folks working on London’s massive new subway program, the 26-mile Crossrail tunnels, know how to keep a secret. Even as they’ve been working away on Europe’s biggest infrastructure project, 130 feet underground, British maker Land Rover has been using the partially completed tunnels to test out its new Range Rover Evoque Convertible.

The maker today confirmed the unusual SUV convertible will go on sale in 2016, though it isn’t saying much more about the project beyond what one can pick out in a short film taken while the Evoque Convertible was being driven through the Crossrail tunnels.

“The tunnels are still under construction, so we had a unique opportunity to explore the vehicle’s all-terrain ability in unchartered territory,” said Murray Dietsch, director of Land Rover Programs. (more…)

Range Rover Revealing Refreshed Evoque in Geneva

A challenging update.

by on Feb.24, 2015

Range Rover's best-selling model, the Evoque gets a facelift for 2016.

As its best-selling model, Land Rover has a lot riding on the fashion-forward Range Rover Evoque. And it hopes to keep momentum building with the upcoming launch of the 2016 Evoque facelift at the Geneva Motor Show.

First introduced as a 2012 model, the Range Rover Evoque served as the British maker’s first entry into the booming compact luxury utility vehicle market. And it proved an instant hit with its blend of functionality, performance and a funky, coupe-like design. Sales last year continued their upward trajectory, in the U.S. Evoque sales rising 9% to 12,440.

“Our challenge has been to evolve the Range Rover Evoque design without diluting its distinctive character,” Land Rover Design Director Gerry McGovern said, ahead of the Geneva debut of the 2016 refresh. (more…)

Land Rover Launching Two Limited-Edition Evoque Models

Part of maker’s strategy of appealing to pricier segment.

by on Feb.18, 2014

The 2014 Evoque is getting two special edition siblings that will utilize the new Land Rover InControlTM Apps infotainment system.

With the recent launch of the Range Rover Autobiography Black, Britain’s Land Rover pushed itself up into some rarified air, at $200,000 apiece, the utes nudging British rival Bentley.

Now, Land Rover’s hot new Evoque is about to get a bit of the limited-edition treatment, as well, two special spin-offs set to make their debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. The strategy is twofold: to keep momentum building for what has become the fastest-selling model in Land Rover history, while also reaching ever upwards in the price spectrum.

The Leader in Global Automotive News

“The new Range Rover Evoque Autobiography is a natural progression, bringing luxury that’s more commonly associated with far larger, more expensive models to a premium compact SUV, while reaffirming its ability to resonate with customers on an emotional level,” explains Land Rover Design Director Gerry McGovern. Range Rover Reveals a Lighter, Leaner 2014 Sport

“The fastest, most agile and responsive Land Rover ever," maker claims.

by on Mar.26, 2013

He may have favored an old Aston in the most recent Bond film, but actor Daniel Craig rolled into New York behind the wheel of a new Range Rover Sport on Tuesday evening.

There was a time when new offerings from Britain’s Land Rover rolled out at a glacial pace.  Perhaps it’s global warming but the maker is rapidly ramping up its rollout schedule.  With the wildly successful launches of the Evoque and Range Rover remake behind it, the Brits are again making news at the New York Auto Show.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have your newest model show up for a packed preview with actor Daniel Craig, better known as 007, behind the wheel.

Craig’s stunt almost overshadowed the introduction of the the completely remade 2014 Range Rover Sport, a car the British maker describes as “the fastest, most agile and responsive Land Rover ever.”

Roughly 6 inches shorter, 2 inches lower and 100 pounds lighter than the recently launched Range Rover, the Sport has undergone a complete maker for 2014.  It migrates from a largely steel body-on-frame platform to a decidedly lighter aluminum unibody architecture.

Compared to the previous-generation Range Rover Sport it sheds about 800 pounds of mass, depending on the specific model, with a base weight of 4727 pounds with a supercharged V-6 powertrain.

The maker promises that will translate into a more agile and fuel efficient model that can now be ordered in standard five-passenger configuration or with an optional 2-seat third row for “occasional use.”

First Drive: 2012 Range Rover Evoque

Forget going off-road. How about tunneling under Liverpool?

by on Sep.08, 2011

Even the Welsh rain couldn't slow our Range Rover Evoque during a recent drive.

Plenty of vehicles boast about their off-road capabilities.  But how many will take you underground to back up those claims?  And under Liverpool, no less?

But that’s precisely where we found ourselves in the new 2012 Range Rover Evoque, recently, cautiously piloting the maker’s new offering through a network of long-abandoned railroad tunnels deep beneath the old shipping town perhaps best known as the birthplace of the Beatles.

It was an unusual way to introduce a significant new offering from a brand that has traditionally defined the classic sport-utility vehicle.  The 2012 Range Rover Evoque is the first major new product to emerge from the British marque since Land Rover – and sibling brand Jaguar – were sold to Indian automotive wannabe Tata Motors several years ago.  It’s the newest model to share the top-line Range Rover badge.  And, perhaps most notably, it’s Land Rover’s first crossover-utility vehicle.

That’s more than a subtle distinction.  The 2012 Range Rover Evoque migrates to a car-like unibody platform, rather than Land Rover’s traditional body-on-frame truck chassis.  It also adopts a funky, coupe-like design that styling chief Gerry McGovern confides will have a strong influence over the next generation of Land Rover products – whether truck or crossover.

Stay in the Know!

The new model is both the smallest and, at just north of 3,500 pounds in base configuration, the lightest model ever to wear a Land Rover badge.  That reflects the reality of today’s automotive market.  Motorists are generally downsizing as they struggle to deal with crowded city streets and rising fuel prices.  That doesn’t mean they want to give up style, performance, space or functionality, however.

First Look: Range Rover Evoque

Maker unveils, reveals name of its first-ever crossover.

by on Jul.01, 2010

A pair of firsts for Land Rover: the 2011 Evoque will be the brand's first crossover and its first front-drive-based vehicle.

Land Rover’s first crossover-utility vehicle, and the first product from the British maker to adopt a front-wheel-drive powertrain, has been formally unveiled on the grounds of London’s Kensington Palace, a part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the U.K. maker’s flagship Range Rover SUV.

The Range Rover Evoque is the eagerly-awaited and much-discussed production version of the Land Rover LRX show car first unveiled two years ago at the North American International Auto Show, in Detroit.

Product News!

“This is the smallest, lightest, most fuel-efficient addition to the Land Rover line-up ever,” declared the maker’s Managing Director Phil Popham, who stressed Land Rover’s goal of “broadening our appeal” with the Evoque.
