eBay Motors Now Offers New and Used Car Clicks

The online auction site, eBay Motors, today changed its format to offer shoppers the option to choose either new cars or used cars.

This new vehicle option is said to allow franchise dealers to target local consumers ready to purchase a new vehicle in a no-haggle environment. Through this new car offering, more than 2,600 certified Zag dealers join the eBay Motors family.

The site offers “everyday cars for everyday drivers,” as well as collector cars, motorcycles, auto parts and accessories

This revised format builds on existing selling options for new vehicles offered by eBay Motors, including National Market, which lists vehicle inventory to more than 10 million  visitors each month, and Local Market, which allows dealers to offer deals only to nearby buyers.

Dealers can now choose from a variety of new car selling options on eBay Motors, including auction, fixed price, best offer or an online classified ad. This may or may not make car shopping easier for consumers in my view.

Currently, new vehicles make up about 13% of all autos sold on eBay Motors. And coverage is spotty depending on where you live and how many — if any — dealers are participating.

General Motors Company will today stop selling new cars and trucks in California online through eBay. The move comes as a surprise given previous executive remarks on the experimental program. During a press conference on September 1, GM said its nascent California eBay project resulted in 4,000 shoppers who negotiated a new vehicle price in the first three weeks of the program.

GM had extended the eBay program through the end of September. Retail sales in California during August when the program began were up 63% — roughly three times the national increase in sales. However, the CARS program, aka Clunkers, was also an influence on August results.

“Once the California program winds up, we’ll take a look at the results and determine if we should roll it out nationally later this year,” LaNeve said then.

Well, the results are apparently not good enough for the company, which is struggling to maintain its market share after decades of decline.

A GM spokesperson said the current national “May the Best Car Win” marketing effort is the company’s current area of concentration. The initial results of that controversial campaign, which offers a 60- day money-back guarantee and has the Chairman pitching it on TV, will not be known until September sales are reported tomorrow.

Year-to-date GM sales are off 35%. GM dealers in the United States during August delivered 246,479 vehicles, the company’s highest total in 2009. The August total, when compared with a very strong sales performance in August 2008 from “an Employee Pricing” promotion then and lower fleet sales this year, was down 20%. Overall, retail sales were down 17% while fleet sales declined 29%.

GM said the eBay program resulted in 1.5 million unique web visitors and it produced about 15,000 leads for dealers.

More than 225 GM dealers in California have agreed to the pilot program.

When General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson said that online shopping was coming during a press conference last month, it was before the details were agreed with eBay. Now they have been resolved and couple of hundred participating California Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Pontiac dealers will be open for business online.

The new car shopping website, gm.ebay.com, will be available to consumers from August 11 through September 8, 2009 will make online shopping a reality. It comes at a time when GM marketing is having trouble with sales; they are off 19% in July while the industry was off only 12%. It is not immediately clear, how the program differs from those of the many dealers who are already independently conducting business online, except that it offers easier access to many dealers at on web site.

Consumers will be able to browse hundreds of dealer online showrooms, ask questions, negotiate prices, and arrange financing and payment to purchase a new 2008, 2009 or “select” 2010 car, crossover or truck models.

More than 225 GM dealers in California have agreed to the pilot program. GM says that shoppers can at any given time expect to see a wide selection of up to 20,000 new GM vehicles at “very competitive prices.”

Vehicles will be offered through eBay Motors’ standard formats such as “Buy It Now,” where shoppers agree to pay the advertised price, and “Best Offer,” where buyers indicate the price they are willing to pay and can negotiate online with the dealer.

For all the financial wizardry, and the $50 billion in federal aid, that helped pull General Motors through bankruptcy, the company’s long-term success could come down to one word, “Chevrolet.”

You can’t cost-cut your way to prosperity, GM CEO Fritz Henderson made quite clear during a meeting with a handful of reporters, including TheDetroitBureau.com.  “Fantastic products” that can win back buyers “will drive everything,” the CEO stressed repeatedly.

As it filed for Chapter 11 protection, on June 1st, the troubled automaker held a market share of just over 20%.  But that included all eight North American divisions, four of which — Hummer, Saab, Saturn and Pontiac — will either be dropped or sold off.  Yet the automaker’s reorganization plan projects it will be able to maintain a share of somewhere between 18 and 18.5%, numbers that have raised concerns among many industry observers.

Henderson defended that optimistic forecast, noting that Hummer and Saab have contributed little to GM’s overall volume, in recent years, though the demise of Saturn will have a modest but measurable impact on the automaker’s sales.  And as for Pontiac, a major portion of its sales went to daily rental and other fleets, “and we feel with our other brands we have the possibility of picking up a large portion” of that volume.
