First Drive: GLK 250 Turbo Diesel

Like other German carmakers, Mercedes-Benz has put down a large bet on diesel, rolling out diesel-powered vehicles at a fast clip to meet the American demand for style and fuel economy.

As part of its diesel campaign, Mercedes elected to install its new four-cylinder diesel engine in its GLK sports utility vehicle. The same diesel engine will also be made available in the revamped Mercedes Benz E-Class sedan, starting in September. The first gasoline-powered version of the new E-Class is due in showrooms this month.

As it stands, the new four-cylinder, Mercedes-designed and Mercedes-built turbo diesel, which is the first four-cylinder diesel Mercedes-Benz has made available in North America, seems to fit perfectly into the GLK. The clatter that seems to have plagued the diesel engine in the past was almost non-existent at ignition, when the vehicle was idling or while driving at various speeds on country roads or on the freeway. It wasn’t exactly whisper quiet, but it was close.

It’s not even on sale yet, but some folks are  worrying about what they’ll get on a trade-in for the all-new Mercedes E-Class. Let’s face it, buying a new car is exciting, but reselling it can be a big disappointment. That is why many people take into account the possible resale value of their new car years before they plan on selling it.

Mercedes buyers can be at ease: the German market research institute Bähr & Fess Forecast has calculated the resale value of the new Mercedes E-Class. And it’s forecasting that Mercedes’ mid-range sedan will have the highest value of any vehicle after three years of ownership in the luxury segment.

The new E 250 CD will realise up to 62.5 percent of its current new price, earning it accolades as ‘2009 value retention champion’ from the German weekly magazine AutoBild. In all, Mercedes passenger cars occupy the top positions in eight market segment.

It takes little more than a glance to realize Dieter Zetsche isn’t your typical auto industry executive. Sure, he wears the appropriately tailored suits, and can rattle off facts and figures as well as any other automotive CEO. But there’s also the bushy, trademark moustache, bald dome and twinkling eyes that hint at the quick sense of humor that was the centerpiece of a series of TV ads featuring Zetsche during his tenure as CEO of Chrysler Corp.

Running that struggling U.S. operation was one of the toughest challenges of his long career, he admits, and it wasn’t much easier to approve the break-up of Chrysler’s nine-year marriage to Germany’s Daimler. But the 55-year-old Zetsche has faced plenty of challenges since taking the reigns from the controversial Juergen Schrempp, the architect of a vast expansion of the Daimler empire, which included the Chrysler deal. Since returning to Germany, Zetsche has returned to basics. Though Daimler still holds a stake in the parent of Airbus, it has re-emphasized its roots as an automaker, with brands like Smart and the flagship Mercedes-Benz.

Like virtually every automaker, Mercedes has been hit hard by the global automotive downturn; indeed, the economic turmoil has had an unusually large impact on the luxury car market. But Zetsche remains “”carefully optimistic” that Mercedes will continue to be one of the globe’s premier marques, and emerge from the recession stronger than ever. Paul A. Eisenstein caught up with the Turkish-born executive recently, and shared this conversation…

Q: Dr. Zetsche, how do you see the year just ended?

Zetsche: Two thousand eight had two faces, two parts. The first half, we were running pretty much at the levels we set for ourselves, and then, during the second half, the world changed all together, as world markets declined, month after month, and always worse than forecast. But we did reasonably well, especially when compared to 2007, which was a record year for us. We can’t spend all time guesstimating how the markets will develop (in 2009), so we will focus on our strength, which is product, and have major products ready for launch, such as the new E-Class. There is a paradigm shift towards lower CO2, so we are looking at this crisis as an opportunity. So, we are carefully optimistic about the future of our company.

Spied: 2010 E-Class Coupe

Carrying the cues of the Mercedes Fascination Concept into production.

What in the past was identified as the next CLK, are actually all-new coupe and convertible versions new E-Class. We have the best pics yet of this two door and these prototypes have almost no disguise at all!

These new models will be replacing the smaller CLK models, and will carry several of the styling cues from the Fascination Concept shown last month at the Paris Motor Show.

The new coupe and E-Class sedan will launch together in mid-2009 (as a 2010 model), with the convertible following several months later. And, of course, the coupe and convertibles are expected to be offered with the full range of E-Class powerplants.
