Obama Speaking in Michigan Republican Country

Not surprisingly, DOE releases a report on the positive impact of advanced vehicle spending ahead of the President’s speech.

The Administration, of course, faces difficult mid-term elections because of the economy.

On the eve of President Obama’s campaign trip today to Holland in Republican dominated western Michigan, the Department of Energy issued a report on the positive economic effects of the Administration’s spending on advanced batteries and vehicles.

The study “Recovery Act Investments: Transforming America’s Transportation Sector,” not surprisingly, claims to show how Recovery Act funds are creating new jobs.

U.S. unemployment at about 10% (reported, not actual) remains at levels not seen in at least four decades, as the Great Recession continues unabated. Michigan is particularly hard hit with a seasonally adjusted figure for June at 13.2% of its workers on the street. Critics maintain that the real number of people unemployed in Michigan is closer to 20%. Michigan has had the honor of  producing the nation’s highest unemployment rate for four straight years now.

The Administration, of course, faces difficult mid-term elections because of a stalled economy, high unemployment, and soaring deficits, among other liabilities, real or imagined by increasingly hostile opponents. The sight Obama is speaking at won’t be operational for two years, and in the interim Korean-made battery cells will be imported for use in Chevy and Ford electric vehicles that taxpayers are helping to underwrite.

Obama will be  saying that the construction of  new plants, the addition of new manufacturing lines, as well as the installation of electric vehicle charging stations across the country are helping to build an emerging “domestic” electric vehicle industry from the ground up.

Sound Bites or Sound Policy?

The Administration is spending your (borrowed) tax dollars on a broad portfolio of advanced vehicle technologies hoping that the monies, which, to be fair, are matched by private funds, will ultimately rebuild the “domestic”  auto industry.

Obama will apparently claim that these investments are “driving down the costs associated with electric vehicles and expanding the domestic market.” A proposition that remains to be seen.

U.S. DOE Announces $24 Million for Algal Biofuels

How about a tank of microalgae Botryococcus?

The U.S. Department of Energy has announced an investment of as much as  $24 million of your tax dollars to three research groups to explore the commercialization of algae-based biofuels.

Despite algae’s potential, touted for 50  years, many technical and economic challenges must be overcome for algal biofuels to find their way into your tank.

Developing cost-effective renewable transportation fuels is said to be a key component of the Obama Administration’s strategy to cut greenhouse gas emissions and move the U.S. toward energy independence – a goal that goes all the way back to the Carter Administration and the aftermath of the fuel crisis of the 1970s. This latest program from DOE is actually a revival of one that was dropped by Democratic President Bill Clinton in 1996.

Fuelishness?

U.S. oil imports remain at more than 375 million barrels a month, close to the record of more than 400 million in spite of the ongoing Great Recession and failed Administration attempts to create jobs.

Chrysler Wants $224 Million from U.S. for EVs

If granted, the company will match the federal money.

Bob Nardelli, Chairman and CEO, Chrysler LLC, introduces the Jeep EV and Dodge EV to automotive journalists at the Company's World Headquarters in September of 2008. Chrysler LLC announced today that it has packaged new, production-intent advanced electric-drive technology in three different vehicles - one for each of its brands, Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge. Chrysler said at least one model is targeted to be produced in 2010 for consumers in North American markets, and in European markets after 2010. The Dodge EV is an all-electric sports car. The Jeep EV is a Range-extended Electric Vehicle with Wrangler capability.

In September of 2008, Chrysler said that at least one model was targeted to be produced in 2010 for consumers in North American markets. The Dodge EV is an all-electric sports car. The Jeep EV is a "range-extended" electric vehicle.

Chrysler LLC is asking the U.S. Department of Energy for $224 million from the department’s Transportation Electrification Initiative to finance the development of electric vehicles (EVs). It joins a long list of competitors also seeking federal funds.

The list of vehicles targeted from the program includes the Dodge Ram 1500 Plug-in Hybrid-electric Vehicles (PHEV), Chrysler Town & Country PHEVs and Chrysler Town & Country Electric Vehicles.

“Department of Energy (DOE) initiatives aimed at vehicle electrification “demonstrates how Chrysler LLC, with its partners and the DOE, can work together to promote technological innovation and energy independence in the United States,” Chrysler said.

Chrysler LLC applied for two programs established by the DOE: the Electric Drive Vehicle Battery and Component Manufacturing Initiative; and the Transportation Electrification Initiative.

Both are designed to speed up development, demonstration, evaluation and manufacturing of EVs and PHEVs. The programs represent a 50/50 cost-share opportunity with $224 million from Chrysler LLC and its partners, combined with a matching $224 million from the DOE. These funds will accelerate the market introduction and penetration of advanced powertrains.    (more…)
