Chinese Automaker GAC Returning to Detroit Auto Show

Move could signal brand is finally ready to enter the U.S. market.

by on May.18, 2016

GAC Group announced it is returning to the Detroit Auto Show next year after a two-year absence.

Guanghzhou, the economic engine as well as the largest city in Southern China, is hoping its state-owned automotive company, the GAC Group, can use its clout in the Chinese market to move on to a larger stage.

That “larger stage” being the U.S. Many are looking at the return to Detroit as a precursor to selling vehicles here. If that happens, GAC will be the first company to do so.

Auto Show News!

“As we look to establish ourselves as a global brand we are optimistic we can gain more momentum following the announcements we will make this coming January in Detroit,” hinted Zeng Qinghong, vice chairman and president of GAC Group. (more…)

For much of the last year, Ram has made its mark on the full-size truck segment with its new EcoDiesel model, stealing some of the thunder from Ford’s new aluminum-bodied F-150. Now it’s looking to make some headlines at the other end of the spectrum: off-road capability.

The new Ram Rebel stormed the North American International Auto Show this week thumbing its nose at those who question the truck’s ability to handle the road less, or never, taken.

“Offering an off-road-style package on the Ram 1500 has been on our to-do list for some time but the right combination didn’t present itself until now,” said Bob Hegbloom, president and CEO — Ram Truck Brand, FCA US LLC, in a statement. (more…)

Buick Drops Top in 2016 with New Convertible: Cascada

Brand debuts first convertible in 25 years.

by on Jan.11, 2015

Buick's back in the droptop market wih the all-new 2016 Cascada. The convertible is expected to hit dealer showrooms early in 2016.

Buick’s efforts to ditch its stodgy and staid reputation took another step forward today as it rolled out its first convertible in 25 years: the 2016 Cascada, which will go on sale early next year.

The new ragtop is a convertible from the word go, not a retrofitted coupe or sedan. Set up as a 2+2 that will seat four adults, the Cascada is a departure from the division’s last convertible: the poor-selling Buick Reatta. Pricing was not announced.

“The new, 2016 Buick Cascada is a beautiful, engaging convertible that represents the very best of the brand’s global development practices,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Buick, in a statement. “It’s a car that will delight customers with its fun spirit and help drive the momentum that’s fueling Buick’s success.” (more…)

BMW 4-Series in the Flesh in Detroit

Bavarian automaker spins the coupe off from the 3-Series sedan line.

by on Jan.14, 2013

BMW is spinning off its 3-Series Coupe into a separate model called the 4-Series.

Is there some danger in moving the coupe version of the BMW’s vaunted 3-Series to a new nomenclature?

Probably not.

BMW pulled the cover off the 4-Series Concept Coupe today at the Detroit Auto Show.

Ian Robertson, member of BMW AG’s Board of Management, said the new car offers a new level of presence, elegance and dynamics.

“In designing the Concept 4 Series, we were determined to make a Coupe that stands above all others in its class,” Robertson said. “The result is an entirely new Coupe with more aesthetic differentiation and more product substance.

BMW’s 4-Series is the coupe counterpart to the 3-Series, just as the 6-Series is to the 5-Series and the 8 is to the 7. Apparently, in BMW-ese, even numbers signify two doors rather than four.

While BMW is calling the car it is showing at the North American International Auto Show a concept, the production version will likely be very close to the show car.

BMW Emphasizes 3-series Efficiency

New 3-series features new turbo four cylinder and hybrid model.

by on Jan.09, 2012

BMW's new 3-series improves efficiency with a new four-cylinder engine and a hybrid model.

The idea of a powerful sports sedan and fuel efficiency would seem to be in direct opposition.

But BMW, the top purveyor of the sports sedan – and most would say, the originator of the concept – is taking on the challenge head on.
BMW rolled out a more efficient new 3-series, it’s most important model, at the Detroit Auto Show on Monday. The sixth-generation model reintroduces a four cylinder engine to the U.S. market, but the automaker also showed the first hybrid version of its most important model.

The 2012 model is expected to go on sale next month. Replacing the outgoing model’s standard 3.0-liter straight six, the new four-cylinder is a turbocharged 2.0 liter producing 240 horsepower powering the base 328i. The 300-horsepower, single-turbo 3.0-liter carries over in the 335i.

There will also be a hybrid version, which will combine a 335-horsepower gasoline engine with an electric motor to provide about 37 miles per gallon highway. Called ActiveHybrid 3, it is expected to go on sale in the fall.

The four-door sedan comes first, but eventually, there will be coupe, convertible and high-performance M3 versions.

Nissan to Show Pathfinder Concept at Detroit Auto Show

Nissan says it has "re-imagined" its body-on-frame SUV.

by on Dec.20, 2011

Nissan is teasing the unveiling of its Pathfinder SUV, which it will show at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Nissan is teasing a Pathfinder Concept that will break cover at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month.

Like a lot of automakers, Nissan is apparently redeveloping it’s traditional body-on-frame sport utility vehicle, into a new crossoverish SUV, built on car underpinnings. In fact, Nissan says the Pathfinder has been “re-imagined.”

Interestingly, Nissan has actually skipped the Detroit show for the last 3 years, so it plans to make the most of its return to Detroit.

Reports say Nissan is planning to use its Altima car platform as the basis for the Pathfinder. It is planning to build it, as well as a new Infiniti version, at its plant in Smyrna, Tenn.
