Toyota Changing Up Small-Car Strategy

Maker also plans to offer hybrid tech to competitors — for a price.

Toyota's acquisition of Daihatsu is allowing the maker to change up its small-car strategy as well as its hybrid powertrain technology.

As a part of a shift of its corporate strategy, Toyota Motor Corp. and its Daihatsu Motor Co. are preparing a new plan for selling small cars in various emerging markets around the world.

The Emerging Market Compact Car Co. will begin operations on Jan. 1, with the objective of developing “competitive ever-better cars” based on Daihatsu’s approach to manufacturing affordable, high-quality products.

As part of the re-organization, Toyota Motor Asia Pacific Engineering and Manufacturing Co. Ltd. in Thailand is being renamed Toyota Daihatsu Engineering and Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and becomes an entity under the new internal company. (more…)

Toyota Confirms it Will Buy Rest of Daihatsu

Deal worth about $3 billion.

Confirming earlier reports out of Japan, Toyota says it plans to buy out the remaining 48.8% of microcar maker Daihatsu that it does not already control.

The deal, which will strengthen Toyota’s hand in the minicar market in both Japan and emerging markets, will involve a stock swap worth about $3 billion. The takeover is expected to be completed by late July.

“We see this as the perfect opportunity to cement our relationship with Toyota, and, by doing so, to embark on a new period of growth, and to elevate the Daihatsu brand to a global standard,” Daihatsu said in a statement announcing the deal.
