SUVs Rule at the NY Auto Show

Utes of every size and price range roll into the Big Apple.

by on Mar.28, 2016

Acura unveiled the latest update of its best-selling model, the 2017 MDX, in New York.

When Mazda pulled the wraps off the new MX-5 Miata RF, a new version of its 2-seat roadster, on Thursday, it was one of the rare exceptions at a New York International Auto Show marked by the debut of a score of new sport- and crossover-utility vehicles.

In a variety of shapes and sizes – as well as a broad range of prices — they can be found in every corner of the Jacob Javits Convention Center. And, if anything, industry officials made it clear they’ll have still more utes to unveil in the near future.

Auto Show News!

“It appears there is no end in sight to the remarkable growth of the crossover market, here and around the world,” said Carlos Ghosn, the CEO of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, as he opened up the auto show’s annual media preview with a keynote speech.

Nissan Gets a Gripz on the Next Juke

A hint of a sportier Juke to come.

by on Sep.15, 2015

The Nissan Gripz Concept aims to blend the functionality of a Juke with the sportiness of a 370Z.

Even before it rolled onto the stage at the Frankfurt Motor Show on Tuesday, the Nissan Gripz was already generating some wild rumors suggesting it might be anything from the next Juke crossover to a replacement for the Nissan 370Z sports car.

In a sense, both of those ideas are accurate. No, the Z-car isn’t going away, but today’s buyers want something more than the minimal soft-roaders of years past, and the Gripz suggests the next-generation Juke will bring not only the flexibility and utility of a crossover vehicle, but also the fun-to-drive characteristics of a sports cars.

Auto Show News!

Exactly how much of the Gripz concept will carry over into production remains to be seen, but expect to see some key elements, including the so-called V-Motion grille, which Nissan global creative director Shiro Nakamura confirmed will be the new face of Nissan products.

by on Sep.10, 2013

The automaker debuted the new crossover in both Frankfurt, Germany and at its technical center in Farmington Hills, Mich.

Scott Shirley, marketing manager, said the new Rogue was designed specifically to compete with vehicles such as  the Toyota RAV4, the Ford Escape and Honda CRV in what is considered one of the fastest growing segments in the automobile industry.

Cherokee Revives Old Name for New Jeep

No more Liberty for SUV brand.

by on Feb.25, 2013

The look is familiar but distinctive, with head and foglights in a notably unusual arrangement.

Chrysler is turning to an old name for a brand new Jeep. Say farewell to Liberty.  The replacement model that will added to the line-up for 2014 will be rechristened the Jeep Cherokee, reviving a nameplate that helped kick off one of the most dramatic transformations in modern automotive history.

Jeep isn’t saying much beyond describing the 2014 Cherokee as an “all-new, ‘no-compromise’” vehicle that will set “a new standard with even more best-in-class capability, exemplary on-road driving dynamics, and fuel economy improvements of more than 45% versus the outgoing mid-size SUV model.”

The new mid-size sport-utility vehicle will make its formal debut at the upcoming New York Auto Show.  The 2014 Jeep Cherokee will be assembled at Chrysler’s big Toledo Assembly Plant a half-hour south of Detroit, the same factory that produced the old Jeep Liberty.

Jeep Compass Gets New Look, New Direction

Jeep Patriot gets a temporary reprieve.

by on Jan.14, 2013

The 2014 Jeep Compass adopts a style more in keeping with "big brother" Grand Cherokee.

A quick search of the web reveals a wide range of opinions about what Jeep has in store for its two smallest models, the Compass and Patriot.  And there’s good reason.  They’re actually two takes on the same platform, one designed to look like a fairly conventional SUV, the other a crossover.

Contrary to some forecasts that the one or both models would vanish or be replaced by the 2014 model-year, it seems they’re due to stick around, at least for now. But the changes being revealed at this year’s North American International Auto Show would suggest that the Jeep Compass is the most likely to remain in the line-up long-term.

Your Auto Resource!

“We knew that Compass and Patriot needed work to take them into the future,” explains the brand’s chief executive Michael Manley.

Both undergo some notable changes for 2014, and they will share a new PowerTech 6-speed automatic gearbox that replaces the previous CVT transmission, and which will help the two compact crossovers achieve an EPA-rated 30 miles per gallon on the highway.

GM Buries Avalanche

Pickup/SUV blend a victim of weak demand.

by on Apr.13, 2012

Buried under. The Chevrolet Avalanche Black Diamond edition.

Chevrolet is about to bury its once-popular Avalanche – but not without a fitting farewell.

The Avalanche, for those who might have forgotten, was Chevy’s attempt to blend the best attributes of a pickup and it ever-popular Silverado pickup.  Launched a decade ago, it was a significant seller.  But with few changes over the years as the maker moved on to other things, Avalanche fell off the public’s radar and rather than invest in a questionable redesign Chevrolet will send the crossover into retirement.

Your Source!

But first, the automaker will offer one last special package, dubbed the 2013 Chevrolet Black Diamond Avalanche, subtle body tweaks including body-colored bed surrounds and special badging, as well as a range of additional features.

The LS, for example, will get power-adjustable pedals, park assist, a rearview camera and remote start, among other things. Pricing will start at $36,975, including delivery charges.  That’s a $2,500 discount.

First Look: 2013 GMC Acadia and Acadia Denali

Aiming to maintain momentum in a tough segment.

by on Feb.09, 2012

The 2013 GMC Acadia Denali makes it Chicago debut.

Chicago Auto Show-goers will be the first to get a close-up look at the updated 2013 GMC Acadia, as well as the premium spin-off, the Acadia Denali.

The two new models will likely play a critical role for GMC, now the second best-selling brand in the General Motors portfolio.  Despite its age, the outgoing Acadia crossover had its best year yet in 2011, with demand surging 16% — and half of its sales coming from customers trading in non-GM products, according to Tony DiSalle, GMC’s vice president of marketing.

News You Can Use!

“While (traditional) trucks and SUVs will be the foundation of the GMC brand,” DiSalle said during a Chicago Auto Show preview, “we’re expanding our appeal with bold crossovers like the Acadia.”

But the big CUV will have some tough competition, facing up against domestic products of comparable or slightly smaller size like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ford Explorer, as well as imports ranging from the Toyota Highlander to more upscale models from European imports that also target what GMC calls the “professional grade” customer.

Ford Dropping Escape Hybrid and Adding EcoBoost

Maker claims new 1.6-liter EcoBoost will outperform old hybrid - and deliver better mileage.

by on Oct.05, 2011

The redesigned Ford Escape will no longer offer a hybrid package - but will have two available EcoBoost options.

Ford will drop the Escape Hybrid when it launches an all-new version of its popular utility vehicle next year, turning to a high-mileage alternative using a new 1.6-liter version of its EcoBoost engine family.

The Escape Hybrid, though heralded as the first use of gas-electric technology in an SUV, has been selling at a sluggish rate in recent years.  So, Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president of Global Product Development, says the hybrid powertrain will be shifted to a newer people-mover in the Ford line-up, the upcoming C-Max Hybrid, that should be 25% more fuel-efficient than the outgoing Escape Hybrid.

The next-generation Escape, which will migrate to a more crossover-like design and platform, will be officially unveiled at the LA Auto Show next month.  It will come with a 4-cyliner EcoBoost engine rather than a V6 engine, Ford confirmed during a background session.

In the Know!

“Customers are prioritizing fuel economy above every other trait when they make most vehicle purchases,” said Kuzak. “Ford is meeting people’s needs by offering a family of fuel-efficient vehicles – from hybrids to electrics to traditional gasoline-powered cars – packed with class-leading technology, giving customers both exciting and greener driving choices.”
